PSP vs. Nintendo DS and DS Lite
Can any of you provide me with some insight into these units?
My son is 8 years old and we were thinking we'd get him one of these thing for Christmas, but i don't know much about them.
Other than the for the price of a PSP i can get a DS and three or four games i think.
Do i need accessories or anything else?
I tried to get some answers at a local store, but the halfwit clerk was very unhelpful.
Any advice would be appreciated. The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

It really depends what kind of gamer your son is. I, myself, prefer the DS, considering I'm a big fan of flagship Nintendo franchises like Mario and Metroid. I can't speak for the PSP on this, but the DS has an awfully cool wireless function where your kid can link with a friend(s) sitting nearby and play multiplayer games. The touch-screen features are also attractive.
Any specific questions?

I like the PSP but I am a adult. I can rip movies to it, listen to music, photo's, and play games. It will also emulate PS1 games. But this is all coming from an adult. My kid has a DS, she prefers my PSP and my wife is in love with Lumines a puzzle game its awesome.

He's into stuff like NHL 07 and NFL 07, sports type stuff for the most part. Some driving games as well.
He'll want to be able to save his games if he's playing out a full season.
I'm sort of leaning to the Nintendo DS because he doesn't need to watch movies on it, and my impression was the Nintendo games are a bit cheaper.
Do i need any sort of memory card? The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

I've got a DS and so does my brother. A lot of cool games on there. Very cool machine. Even with the lesser horsepower DS is the more popular system that's only increasing so that tells you something about the quality of the experience.

Go with the DS *Lite*.
The screens slaughter those on the original DS.
It's about half the price of the PSP, as well.
Both units (DS and PSP) have built in WiFi, so when you take him to Buffalo Wild Wings while you watch the game, he can log in and play Mario Kart against some kid from Brazil.

I would get a Nintendo DS. I have one, it's the only newer system I play. It has two screens. One is a touch screen, that a bunch of games use. It is a great portable system, and much cheaper than the PSP. The games are at a decent price too, usually around 40 dollars each. The DS light is newer, so I am guessing it is a bit better.

I liked my DS a lot more than PSP. But I don't have any time to play games anymore so I just gave both away.

The DS has a lot going for it in terms of unique and fun games. The PSP is descent but they keep releasing games for it that you can already play on your ps2. Plus the FPS games feel awkard because of the placement of the analong stick and after awhile it hurts to even hold the PSP.
Right now I am playing ff3 on the DS and loving it.-----HuBBs5150-----
