Default The Mighty 'Met - SoCal's original Van Halen radio station

KMET 94.7 was LA's true classic rock station for many, many years. It was a sad day when it went down in the mid eighties and became 'The Wave.'

Anyway, my bud managed to find one of the classic 'Met stickers featuring Van Halen on eBay (the 'Met promoted lots of artists with their signature blue and yellow stickers, AC/DC, the Police, Rush, Maiden, the UsFest, you name it) and was kind enough to bequeath it to me, as he remembered fondly - much as I do - the exact same KMET VH sticker I had on the back on my '71 VW Squareback throughout high school. It was probably this sticker (the big VH one), along with a Town & Country surf logo sticker on the opposite side of the large hatchback style window, that got me pulled over as many times as I did while cavorting around the highways and byways of Southern California.

Ehh, that, or the bong smoke billowing out the windows. Either way.

Just had to share. SoCal folks will probably best appreciate it. What a kick.

The 'Met was great. Anytime KLOS played something I could pass on, I could always count on KMET to be playing something I did like.....and vice-versa.

I have that same sticker actually. I also have one that says Def Leppard on it too. I seriously have no idea how or when I got them. Was a sad day when KMET went away. There was a time rock radio in LA was great.

Wasn't Dusty Rhodes on KMET as well? I seem to recall that name, unsure of the spelling though. If you want the ORIGINAL Van Halen station, then you need to give KROQ props.

KMEL used to be good back in the day. So were KRQR and KSJO.

God I miss good rock stations. T/G for da Scum.

Rodney on the Rock (Rodney Bingenhimer) was one of the first DJ's to play them on the radio. From what my dad told me, they were also an AM radio station as well. He remembered hearing Van Halen on KROQ's AM station back in the late 70's.

Hard to imagine. For anyone not in SoCal, KROQ became the nexus of New Wave music for a long time.

KROQ became the pillar for New Wave and Alternative music in the 80's...Van Halen's type of music hasn't been played on that station for at least 25 years.

I think that once the new wave scene started to break, KROQ took on that "alternative" format.

It was a bummer when the Arrow 93.1 changed formats too.

Pirate Radio wasn't bad in the begining either, 100.3. And of course, the saddest day when KNAC 105.5 died. Yes I know it's on the net now, but it's not the same.

Yeah, back in 1980, KROQ was heavy into Van Halen and AC/DC. Weird now that I think back on it.

Rodney B. is still on KROQ for like one hour a week on Sundays at 1:00 a.m. or something rediculous like that.

In a box in the attic somewhere I still have my KMET and KLOS bumper stickers with bands such as RUSH, VH, TOTO (don't laugh, in the early 80's they knew how to rock - maybe that's where Eddie and Steve Lukather hit it off) etc.
