Drum suggestions for my 7 year old son

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get your experienced opinions on a reasonably priced drum set for my 7 year old son. He says he really wants to play drums and so we are seriously looking into getting him a decent set this year for christmas. We thought about it last year as well, but he was too young we thought. Anyhow, I have been hunting over musiciansfriend.com and came up with a few in our range. What do you think of these?

    2. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ig-?sku=446443

Keep in mind I know nothing about them. Feel free to make suggestions, we are wanting to stay in about the $400.00 range somewhere. We want something solid to begin with in case he does really like these.

    Thanks in advance!

I agree with AJHV. The Pearl set is good . I've had mine for 18 years and I still play them. The Ludwig set is good too. Big Al uses Ludwigs.

You might wanna get everybody in the house and neighbors earplugs too...LOL.

I hope you son enjoys the drums.

Dont think you can go wrong with either set. my son plays on a Ludwig
Accent CS 5 pc set that came with a cymbal pak for $675.00.The accent is
the kit below the cs . A good set for his age. I believe the pearl forum is the
equal to the accent cs. another good pick . might want to look into the kits
that offer cymbal paks . my sons came with a18'crash/ride and 13'hh

Check your local music stores/ drum shops. Sometimes they will meet anything that you can get on the internet. Good luck!

Go with the Ludwig. Most new drums in this price range are much better than you would think. Suprisingly good actually. The reason I say ludwig instead of pearl has nothing to do with quality. It appears that the pearl set comes with deeper "power" toms. Not only is this not the current trend (shallower toms are the thing these days - theyre being called "quick toms" by some companies), but deeper toms are especially unnecessary for a little guy whos not going to be playing arena rock. Both are great companies. Yamaha also.
    Good luck...Merry Christmas!

Thanks a lot for the information guys! I am going to sit down here over the Thanksgiving break and make a decision. Luckily we have a basement he can set up the drum set in and pound away. Our oldest son (10) already plays the saxophone and wails away on it down there.

On a side note, what would be the better set of lighted keys keyboard for me to get for myself? If it the last thing I do, I want to learn piano, even if I just learn to play along.

The more I reread my post, it sounds like we are a regular Partridge family lol. Far from the truth, but I do want the kids exposed to whatever music they want to try. Old dad is pretty proud here, my 2 year old daughter knows the words to Iron man! I about fell out of my chair the first time I heard her humming it. Now, she don't know ALL of the words, but the first time I heard her say Has he lost his mind, can he see or is he blind...pretty rednecky if you ask me! Too cool.

    Thank you again!!!!!

Either set will do, more importantly, tell him to practice a lot and do his rolls on a pillow or something with no bounce. Also , professional lessons might help to get him started.

Anyways , at that age any set will do, so go for the cheaper ones, you will see the progress and maybe spend more later, or maybe throw them in the trash.....

Teaching drums when I was younger I was almost told to lie and say that they were OK, when I knew this kid will never ever get it.....That's the way it was at a lesson place , find a great private guy that loves music and is honest...Cuz most likely yer throwin you're cash away anyways.....

No decisions yet...Steph's uncle heard that we were looking and told us that some of our relation has a huge drum set in his basement he bought for his daughter and she doesn't want to play afterall. I am going to call hopefully in the next week or so and see what he has and what he wants. Thanks again guys! We are going to start him on piano lessons after the first of the year for him to at least understand music and read it.

    UPDATE!

We had a City-Wide garage sale in our little town here and I was making sure all of the sellers we put on our list were happy with how we advertised for them and making my rounds and lo and behold there was a nice looking drumset at this one place, but they wanted more than I was interested in paying so I left. Everyone in town knows everyone so the lady calls and tells me that her son wants to sell the kit...We come to an agreement on $650.00.

Here is what I picked up for my money:

Practically brand new set of PEARL Forum Series Drums -- clean heads look new, very lightly toyed with...Protone heads?!?!
Brand new set of Zildjian ZBT cymbals
    The original Pearl CX300 cymbals

Some other stuff I havent listed, but that is most of it. Hope I made out ok for my sons!
