Default The State of VH: The casual fans perspective

About 6 or 7 of my closest buddies are what I'd call 'casual' VH fans: they dig the music, like the band, but don't follow the daily drama (like us ''losers" ) I'm the one who gives them VH updates, (when the subject comes up), and I've been THE VH guy out of the group of us... they don't come 'round these forums, ya know?

With everything going on these last few months (porn, reunion talk, MA fired), I've sort of been logging in my head what these guys... the UN-die-hards... the casual fans... think and say about VH.

Below is more or less a summary....

They don't care if VH ever plays again or makes a record.

They don't care if the singer is Dave, Sammy, Gary or #4, but think a Dave reunion is probably the way to go.

They WOULD go to another show if a reunion happens, but NOT if tickets are $$$.

They would NOT buy another Greatest Hits (duh!), but would (eventually) buy a CD of new material.

    Sammy won't ever be back.

Most of them think kicking Mike out is the 2nd stupidest idea.

ALL of them think Wolfie on bass is the STUPIDEST idea.

Most say Ed is just fucked up (porn, 2004 playing, drinking, Stern appearance)... a ''tortured artist''.

Most say Solo Dave is pathetic, Sammy's Cabo thing is waaaaaay old, and one guy couldn't even remember Gary's last name.

Most of them just don't care... period.

Here's what I got out of it:

VH is done making an impact in the music industry (I think we knew this)... and VH will have a hard time turning the casual fan (like my friends) back into the die-hards they used to be, IF they release new music or tour or whatever. Those days seem to be done. Michael Anthony has much more support behind him than Ed thinks. (Some of my buds were PISSED about that, 'cause Mike's normal, been there 30 years, vocals, etc... it surprised even me.)

What do you guys think? Agree? Disagree? Do I need new friends?
Sings like a bird. Rocks like a pig.

I hate when people say "VH will still make money because the average, casual music fan has no idea who Mike Anthony is and what he contributed to Van Halen." That's SO wrong. I go to school with a bunch of emo and "new age" fags, who could honestly care less about Van Halen, and know how big a fan I am, always come up to me saying "You hear what Eddie Van Halen did to Mike Anthony? Replacing him with his son? That's such bullshit."

15 year olds, who probably can't name one single VH song even if their lives depended on it (not even Jump) coming to me and telling me its bullshit. What does THAT tell you?

As for the band itself, sure, it isn't and won't ever be the juggernaut it used to be. But it doesn't have to be in the shitter where it currently lies. The casual music fan KNOWS what's happening with Van Halen and find it to be bullshit. The legacy has gone down the toilet, and while the impact still won't be as great, it would be a hell of a lot better if Mike Anthony were there. I know how much Dave / CVH fans are for the Wolfgang addition, but come on, you guys KNOW it's hurting their legacy / impact. It just doesn't work.

If they want even the SLIGHTEST chance of making an impact, they (Ed) needs to make some changes before he becomes, to the casual music fan (because we already know), the biggest dickhead in rock n' roll history. And when 15 year olds who don't know what Jump is come to you saying "No Mike = No VH" that speaks volumes for me, that no matter how novice someone is of this band, they KNOW what goes on, and that it is bullshit...
In and out. I didn't even make that pun on purpose.

Who gives a shit about the casual fan and what they think frankly. I could care less if they'd go see VH without Mike. What they do means nothing to me.

Van Halen is deservingly a nostalgia act as best at this point. Christ, most people don't even know Gary was ever in the band. This doesn't mean the tour won't sell, because it will. The Van Halen name, especially with Roth in the fold, will allow it to do well. It will probably outdraw the last tour just based on the radio hype that will go along with this "reunion", if it indeed does happen. Not to mention if the promoters get behind it, MA or no MA, the sales will be even greater. Just because people won't go due to no MA, these numbers will easily be offset by the number of people that drag their friends to go, or by those that never saw a DLR fronted VH.( I know it's not VH without MA)

Trust me, I want MA there as much as anybody, but he will not be the breaking point for this deal. I know it sucks. But as they say you can never go home again...its so true!

    No MA = No VH

unfortunately they will be the driving force behind the decisions on what we see in regards to MA being in the band or not. I know it shouldn't be like that, but it is. I still think there is a much bigger thing going on to be honest.

Van Halen is a dinosaur, we are all mindless cave men and the ice age is now.
Rock and Roll is a young mans game that has a cruel way of treating its participants if they stay to long or refuse to change and adapt.

There was talk that Dave wanted to do a record with VH that would have a Chemical Brothers feel to it, he was laughed at. On Dave's comments alone I went out and bought a couple CB CD's to see what he might have been talking about. Dave was right, there is definetly something there that could take great advantage of Dave's older voice, Alex's drumbeats and of course Ed's guitar. Sammy even said in those book chapters that it was time to somehow update the bands sound, and that was 1995.
Van Halen can't even seem to see the simple logic in updating the now cheesy keyboard sounds in their live shows for 1984, 5150 and OU812 songs.
Eddie did try to change things up on the guitar and piano with VH3 and even "Catherine" and the die-hards called it garbage.
Van Halen needs to do something THIS YEAR that that isn't Classic, Reunion or based on past glories regardless of who is or isn't in the band.
Being the dinosaur they are though, that won't happen, and it's getting really cold.

I wouldn't say it was garbage; just a tad dark and uninspiring. I personally prefer stuff a little more upbeat and happy from Van Halen but this was for a porno movie so maybe it was appropiate. It's interesting that Dave and Sammy both tried to get the band to change up their musical style. I always thought the bands' signature sound came out of Ed & Al more traditional hard rock influences and Dave's eclectic musical tastes. It was sort of Black Sabbath meets the Ohio Players.

There is one man that can lead VH back to the promised land of making new music that will matter to the masses (not to mention the critics).

    That man is...Rick Rubin.

He revitalized the carreers of both Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond. And is about to bring Metallica back from the edge with their next album.
