Ed's REAL problem with Mike
I was thinking about this when I was reading all of the Mikey posts. The general opinion seems to be that Ed's ticked off about Mike touring with Sam as "The Other Half." To me, that doesn't hold water. Dave co-headlined a major tour with Sam four years ago and played, almost exclusively, Van Halen songs. Hell, his guitar player was even playing Eruption. If the rumors turn out to be true and Ed's trying to work with Dave again, then what's his real beef with Mike? Has something else gone down between these two guys that's not being talked about?

Mike "betrayed the Bros. trust" by ditching them to play with Sam in 2002. So, the Bros. (well, Ed) don't think Mike can be trusted and don't see him as a "brother" anymore.
Oh, but its started way before that. The whole Ray Danniels thing in '94/5 when he took pay cuts and ALWAYS stayed friends with Sam during the ordeal, and this was a period when the Bros. HATED Sam to an extent no one here can even imagine. So, they saw his loyalty towards Sam as a slap in the face to them, hence no bass playing on VH3 and most likely the new tunes in 2004 either.
Its been going on for some 12 years now, and its just playground foolishness...In and out. I didn't even make that pun on purpose.

I think it goes back even before recent events. Dave inferred in his book, around the time of aborted '96 reunion that Ed was lookin' to replace Mike. Even back in the 80's, I seem to recall reading something that Ed wanted Bill Sheenan in the band. This could have been even before Dave left and Sammy joined. It always seemed like Ed wasn't content with Mike as the bands' bassist. I wonder why?

Here's a few excerpts from Sheehan interview to corroborate my above quote:
CRR: You were also approached by Eddie about joining Van Halen weren’t you?
Billy: Yeah I kept it quiet for along time but now that things are pretty much over with them, I like Michael Anthony, he’s a great guy and he’s so important to that band. I was kind of torn inside because I didn’t want to see the band change but I sure did want the gig you know?
CRR: This was around the same time?
Billy: Yeah he came to me after that tour, but it was either the next tour or the one after that that he specifically asked me to join the band. I remember I saw them a few days later and Dave who I didn’t really talk to all that much, I was more in communication with Eddie, came up to me and said "We’re really looking forward to having you come out to L.A.". I was still living in poverty in Buffalo so my head was spinning at the idea. Who knows what the real motivation was? I don’t think they thought Michael was a bad player at all, so I’m not sure what was behind it. I really like Michael’s playing in the band, he’s a great singer and he’s such an important part of that band for me as a fan. Like I said I was torn, it was a great honor to know that I must have been doing something right if they were asking me to join the band. They did ask me, it was a great, great honor and I’m very thankful that they did even though it didn’t work out in the end.

It definitely has something to do with Mike joining Sammy on the 'Dave & Sam 2002' tour. I would probably speculate that it resulted with the way both Dave and Sammy lapped up alot of attention during that tour and turned it into a big media spectacle on their part. When you had things being reported of Sammy dragging a dummy of Edward and boxing it infront of the audience for show and the way both Dave and Sammy together took swipes at the VH brothers through the media on the tour, Mike's involvement would've perhaps humiliated them further, given what their feelings were like then for the 2 previous singers. Also there was Mike's reference to Ed & Al being "Beavis & Butthead" on Sam's Waboritas DVD. I think these particularly aspects offended the brothers, even if it was unintentional on Mike's part.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
Bobby: Who else?
Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?
