Sorry, but I'm just GLAD Sammy's been replaced
Although it does suck that we are not getting the 100% CVH reunion that we waited 22 years for (if the recent talk is true), I do have to say that personally I am more pumped that Dave is possibly back in VH and that Sammy is out of this band. THAT excitement for me is making up for the Mike issue.
I always thought that regardless of the success they had with Sammy, the only person who has the proper musical chemistry to flank EVH's style is Dave. I know many people are freaking out about the Mike issue, and I do see their point, BUT I think we are forgetting that Dave might be back here and making new music with Ed... that is more important to me than any of the other developments.
Dave and Ed's musical styles go together so beautifully when they write. Ed with Sammy to me was missing that true "hard edge" and attitude that is so key in rock music. All the great rock bands had an "edge", like The Who, Zeppelin, Hendrix, old Kiss, RATMachine, etc etc...
On all the Sammy albums there were always so many songs that to me missed the mark, and that was so dissappointing after the 6 pack where EVERY SONG on EVERY ALBUM was a masterpiece... and to think they recorded many of those in 2 or 3 weeks sometimes... mindblowing!!!
Again, I am sorry about the MIke issue, but this return of David Lee Roth is getting me pumped! I can't wait to hear a full length album or even an EP!!
The music is more important then the tour... I'd take a 10 song CD over the tour any day...

Is that all definite then about Mikey?
The Sammy years can't be erased just like that. Oh wait, maybe they can since Mikey's so easily erased. Nevermind.RIP - Classic Van Halen

You are mixing up 2 separate topics I think.
Mike has nothing to do with the Sammy years, he is related to both. I would love to see him back...
The Sammy years are not being "replaced"... they are there... naybody can go out and buy 5150 or Balance... I'm just much rather see Eddie and Dave composing music than ED and Sam... I just don't think they are the best fit... Ed's music should be rougher sounding to me...
Just a personal preference that's all... to each his own...

i have to agree
u can't ignore the fun and success they had with sam. bt if anything, the 04 tour and lack of new material with sam in 04 has showed that version of the band has run its course. i truly believe it's a good change for all involved. change is, dare i say it, inevitable?
ed's guitar and dave's voice/lyrics is a masterpiece.
i'm hopin we get to hear it yet again

Sammy rules. I like his stuff better then Dave, but I'm excited to hear Dave may be back as well.
I think we can all agree that thank God there isn't a fourth singer!"What we are dealing with here, is a complete lack of respect for the law" - Jackie Gleason, Smokey and the Bandit

Original.
Dancin' in the Streets? Not a masterpiece. Ditto CGTSNM. And don't even get me started on Jump, the King Spaghetti of Dave-Ed claptrap.
That 'hard edge' you speak of didn't lose its sharpness because of Sam. It was both Ed and Dave who wanted to move into Top 40 territory with teenybopper-friendly pop.Last edited by Van Squalen; 11.08.06 at 12:07 PM.

I thought the 3 songs in 2004 were very weak.
And even Balance to me is the weakest Sam VH album...
I have to fast forward:
Cant stop Lovin You
Big Fat Money
Not Enough
Doin Time
every time I put that CD on. So I think their drought went back to 1995...
Im sorry, when a band has such chemistyry as the original VH it is almost impossible to accept anything else. Maybe if the origianl band never existed, the Sam version would move me more... I dont know...

So if they tour with Roth without any new material, will that show that the original version had run it course?
btw - I agree about the Sammy comments. I wasn't really mixing topics, just trying to make a point which I'm really not good at lately.RIP - Classic Van Halen

This could be brought up in the stickied thread. I think we can do without another Sam era vs. Dave era topic, anyway.
