i know nirvana is number 5, and vh is 7. i dont agree at all with nirvan ahead of vh. they arent even hard rock really. true, they did some good shit, but this is a no no. its not vh1's fault. this was chosen by the artists. i actually wouldnt be angered if metallica was ahead of vh. only cuz at their best metallica was much harder then vh. vh had attitude, but metallica could be hard and evn dark. but if it were my vote, i would have had 3. sabbath 2. vh 1. led zep

Look at the # of bands on this very list that VH influenced....Crue, Ratt, Living Colour, GnR, Bon Jovi and probably some others.
I'd put VH up to #4 ahead of AC/DC, Nirvana, and Metallica. I think Zep deserves # 1.

I like Hendrix, but him being #3 was just ridiculous. Kiss at #10 is completely laughable as well. I also noticed on the VH vignette, there was hardly any commentary about them from anyone other than Pantera and Henry Rollins. Chuck D? Come on, what the hell does he know about Van Halen. They didn't get the ass-kissing that every other band on that countdown got, or at least it seemed that way to me. Annoyed me.

the whole thing is a joke, really.
i mean, what's the point of having a countdown? there is no "best" in art. there can't be any one thing better than another in the pure sense.
these countdowns exist only to give something for people to watch and argue over. that means ratings and an ego boost for these tv writers who can't come up with anything of substance. the public can't be counted on to watch videos anymore, so we are left with watered down music programming that no one with any real knowledge can stand.

There is no way the artists gathered 100 hard rock bands and agreed on their ranking (a list of opinions would be impossible to agree upon). There had to be a base first...VH1 must have grabbed all the billboard charts, record breakers, influential stats etc. from these hard rock bands over the years and gave the artists who voted a list of them to give their comments.
I couldn't believe Quiet Riot made it and not Styx...Ozzy at 18!!!...I would've put him in the top 10.
Oh, and BTW, did anyone notice the subliminal message when they played snipets of the VH videos when they announced them at #7? (I know I'm fishing, but bare with me here...)
1. all of the clips (except one) were with Dave - no mention of Sammy
2. when they flashed the three seconds of the the "Right Here Right Now" video, it was the part where the words on the screen read "Right now Van Halen is planning a world tour" written in a circle
All in all, I think the list wasn't too far gone. I actually made a list of my top 10 on Thursday and compared to Fridays (alright, I already new #7 & #6), but I was only off by three bands...the rest I hit right on target.

I was kind of surprised to see Gary's face pop up in there, all be it for but a moment.
And, for what it's worth, they started with a Sammy song

Glenn,
You are so wrong about KISS....I think they are very deserving of a top 10 ranking. The category was "TOP 100 Hard Rock Bands" with that would included "showmanship" along with music...The irony of the whole kiss thing is that even though there image was commercialized.....there music really never was. There music from some of their early stuffs rocks, and also could be said that still stands up even 2day. He'll they help discover half of the bands on the list...even our beloved "VAN HALEN". In my opinion Paul Stanley is one of rocks best frontmen. Yes thats right....True there music wasn't rocket science but it still had attitude and kicked ass. If you have never seen them in concert you need to. Remember too, Kiss only second to the beatles has more gold albums than anyone else. As for the rest of list....I thought that BOSTON got a raw deal....they were in the 80's on the count down. Boston first album is vintage rock. Foreigner should have got a higer ranking. I don't think that Guns/Roses were better than Rush. However I agree with the high ranking of AC/DC ....shit "Back in black" one of the greatest albums of all time. "highway to hell"...one of all time best songs. I will say that even as a "kiss" fan i thought it was crazy to have ace as one of the top 5 guitarist. That was a joke!
