This negativity toward Kip Winger is unfair. Listen to his solo albums and the new Winger album and tell me the guy is as much of a joke everyone makes him out to be. Of course, he did look goofy in those old videos, but didn't they all? Still, he wouldn't work in Van Halen. Kip writes his music. He wouldn't be a second fiddle. Anyway, Mike should be back.

Think of things from a business standpoint.

Legally, Van Halen is now just Eddie and Alex. All other players as of '04 are contracted to play in "Van Halen." Wolfgang would be contracted and paid a salary. (How does that work with a minor? Oh... must need his parents' permission.) Dave would also be contracted, just as Sammy was in '04, for the tour and whatever else they work on. If Alan Fitzgerald is on keys again this tour, he'll have a contract as well.

Is there an audience for Dave fronting VH in any configuration? Yes. Will tickets sell? Yes. (The number of tickets that will sell remains an unknown.) Will all parties fullfill their contracts and perform the series of concerts scheduled? Yes. VH will make headlines (of the 'D' section) for their "reunion" with Roth, and fans will again have the chance to see EVH and DLR on stage together, playing songs they wrote together 23-plus years ago.

Eddie probably wants to tour as Van Halen but knows he can only do that now with two singers: David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar. Since Hagar is presently disenchanted with VH and lacking favorability from the camp, Roth is in. Perhaps the pendulum will swing again in a couple of years, though I doubt it; I believe if this tour with Roth comes to fruition it will be the last time we ever see VH in concert.
