When it comes to VH and what ever Eddie, Alex,Sammy, or DLR say's, don't take ANY of it to seriousley. These guys got hugh egos, if you went back to any Rolling Stone interviews and look at quotes that Eddie say's and Sammy, they all wind up contradicting what ever they say. Eddie stated infactically that Sammy wrote the kind of lyrics he wanted and that Roth would never be back in the band. When the threat of a dimished Lime-light and money is on the line they all want to kiss and make-up.

I think it was in Reunion Blues. I haven't read the book since it first came out (and it's in storage at the moment), but I seem to recall that. Dave talks about how he went into '96 in a carefree, optimistic way. Didn't worry about contracts or anything, just sort of on faith. He mentions how if they try a reunion again, he'd do things in a more deliberate, formal-type fashion.
