What kind of Van Halen fan are you?
Species of Van Halen fans:
Eddie Van Halen fan: will generally support anything with Eddie playin' irregardless of lead singer. Sometimes overly biased towards Ed no matter what.
Classic Van Halen fan: Hands down prefers first 6 albums featuring DLR as singer. Most swear only by Dave-era but some sub-species are known to like some Sammy era stuff and harbor no hatred towards Sammy. For this species Classic Van Halen will always be Ed, Dave, Al & Mike. (this is me)
Van Hagar fan: Prefers Sammy Hagar era 1986-95, doesn't quite get what the whole Dave worship thing is all about. Some sub-species are known to hate Dave.
DLR fan: Extremely biased towards Dave. Exhibits unwavering hostility to anything Sammy. Often disguise themselves as classic Van Halen fans yet are known to change color as soon as it appears Dave is back in the band and Mike Anthony is out.

I'm somewhat of a melting pot. Gary was disowned from our family for coming out of the closet which didn't impress Ma & Pa. He comes to visit every couple of years.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
Bobby: Who else?
Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

I would consider myself to be the first three.
EVH fan- yes
CVH fan- yes
VanHagar fan- yes
DLR fan- not really (these days)
Gary Cherone fan-yes
I pretty much love all aspects/incarnations of VH. They were all necessary too. I am really leary of the reunion of VH and DLR, especially w/o Mikey. The loyalty and actions as of late from the VH bros has tainted my future concert attendance. I am not a fair weathered fan but I gotta say that this reunion situation has me worried.

Good stuff is good, bad stuff is bad.
I will say this. If you put all 6 of the guys who have been in this band in a room, and they're all the top of their game, their personality traits are non-existent, and you asked me to pick ONE member I would go see by himself at a live show, the answer is simple...

Primarily a Van Hagar fan, w/ a little CVH thrown in for good measure. Dave's antics made it difficult for me to enjoy them live at all as a youngin (saw them at the 'ol Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh), but once Sammy joined I didn't miss a show. Got nothing against Dave at all, though. It's "The Gravers" that piss me off.

I love it all. I am partial to the Hagar era, simply because of my age and I saw VH live with Hagar 14 times. I was too young to see CVH live.

I'll take the choice not given,
I like the band Van Halen, in all incarnations. There's something good about all "eras".
I honestly don't see how you can like one and hate another, I really don't. I take each album/singer for what it is and just go with it. (doesn't mean I like every song on every album either)
As an aside, it's been my impression there are far more CVH fans that hate anything but that era than there are Sammy era fans that hate everything but that era. I never got that myself.Last edited by VanBlu; 11.05.06 at 08:32 PM.

When I was younger I was pretty much 50/50 between CVH and Van Hagar. As the years have gone on, I find myself listening to Van Hagar less and less. Right now I probably listen to CVH about 80 % of the time. I don't have anything against the Sam years, I saw them every time they came down here and again in 2004, but that era just hasn't held up as well for me. Stuff like 5150 and Summer Nights still holds up, but songs I thought were tolerable back in the day like Love Walks In or When Its Love really didn't age well. I still like the Sam era and I'm glad he was in the band, but its the Dave era that interests me most.
Outside of that, I never cared for VHIII and never really cared about Sam or Dave solo.
