    Default Axis vs. H.P.

    As we all already know,
After the ebmm eddie van halen signature there was the axis.
After the peavy wolfgang there was the H.P. signature.
Which leads me to the question, Which company's followup is better?

I haven't heard or read good things about the HP. Although I think it is a little more veratile that the Axis with the pick up selection. I think they can be split if I remember correctly. Can't recall.

The HP Special is a great guitar. Now, keep in mind I absolutely hate the Wolfgang necks. The radius is heinous on it, especially compared to the EBMM. With that being said, the HP neck is nice to play IMO, the splittable PU's are nice, but it doesn't look nearly as Rock n Roll as the Wolfgang. If I had to choose between the Axis and HP Special, I'd get the Axis. I always found the EBMM far superior to the Wolfgang, and the Axis is pretty much indentical.

I cannot believe that you think the wolfgangs neck is crappy. it is probably one of the best necks out there. I have a wolfgang standard top of the line and its to die for. But I do agree with how the H.P. doesnt look and have that rocknroll vibe.

P.S. Do you even own a wolfgang? if not you can not make the usumption that the axis is supperior.

Funny considering they're the same necks.

Yup, same exact necks on the Peaveys.

It's an interesting question considering that that both EBMM and Peavey had to contend with the unenviable task of releasing a post EVH model!
I'm used to seeing the old (and tiresome) "EVH EBMM vs. Wolgang" question.
In the final analysis, it's purely a subjective argument. Owners of both models will never change their intractable minds about two great guitars!
I've the opportunity to play all four models (EVH EBMM, EBMM Axis, Wolfgang and HP) and all are fantastic instruments! Each model has something to offer! Thet are ALL interalated since they are all from the SAME father-EVH!

Wolfgang_'99: Yes, I've owned a couple of Wolfgangs, but the neck radius was too radical a departure from the EBMM. I absolutely loved the sound of the Wolfgang Specials bridge pickup, but couldn't get used to the neck. I'm not saying the guitar is crap at all, I just found it unbelievable that the EBMM and Wolfgang are signature guitars for the same person. Also, although I don't necessarily believe it, I heard years ago from a dealer that Eddie's Wolfgang necks weren't the stock 15" radius, but closer to the EBMM's 10" radius. Probably bull, but you never know.

Jedi McFly: I assume the wink was for the fact the necks on the EBMM and Wolfgang are nowhere near the same. Because they're not. With the exception of the 'worn down' feeling on the lower frets, they don't resemble each other at all.

I'm not dissing the Wolfgang, it's probably one of the best mass-produced guitars that were ever built. Someday I'm going to buy a body and hardware, and one of Frankenstraat's (from eddievanhalen.com) custom replica necks (12" radius), because in the end, I think the Wolfgang looks more Rock n Roll than the EBMM, which is still a very Rock n Roll guitar. I have many envious admirers of mine.

I think he was stating that the two PEAVEY necks (the HP and the Wolfgang) are identical.

I saw Bob from GW, atleast I think that's his name, review the HP. He was goin off on that bad boy, and the HP held up great. I've never played one myself, but it sounded like a kick ass guitar.

Yup, that's what I was saying.

The pre-production models of the HP Special shown at Namm had slightly thinner necks that changed thickness when you moved up the fretboard. For some reason, they changed it back to the old Wolfgang neck shape.

I've had a lot of pressure from fellow Wolfgang fans to try out the HP Special because most think it's a better instrument. While I am a little curious about the changes, most of those very changes are not of any interest to me; I want nothing to do with a floating trem (even if it has a blocking feature--I don't even want the option on my guitar) and the coil tap is cool but I've done that to a couple of Wolfs and am pleased for the most part with the results. Since the neck is the same and I much prefer the look and contour of the Wolfgang, I don't see the point.

Then I remembered something... When Eddie was designing the Wolfgang, he said he was simply going for a guitar that HE would like playing, and if anyone else was hip to it they'd have the option of owning it. Lots of versitility wasn't the point of the Wolfgang (though I use it in a LOT of different playing applications, and it most certainly fullfiles many functions).

Also, the EBMM / Wolfgang debate is stupid. Similar instruments... Enough changes to warrant a preference for one or the other... We're all different players and different people, thus we will all have an opinion; one is not more valid than another.
