Toy Gun Lands Lawyer Behind Bars

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine -- A well-known Portland attorney was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with criminal threatening after police said he was seen near a highway apparently carrying an assault rifle.

Thomas Connolly, 49, was taken into custody after South Portland confronted on an Interstate 295 overpass at about 9 a.m.

South Portland Police Chief Ed Googins told News 8 that two officers went to the area of the overpass between Westbrook Street and Broadway where the found Connolly dressed as Osama bin Laden, holding what appeared to be a gun, dynamite and grenades -- as well as a sign that read "I Love TABOR," referring to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights initiative on the Nov. 7 ballot

Googins said one of the people who saw the sign thought it said "I love the Taliban."

According to Googins, the officers repeatedly ordered Connolly to put down the gun, then drew their weapons when Connolly moved toward them.

Police said the gun turned out to be fake.

They said Connolly told them he was on the overpass to protest TABOR and didn't mean to cause any trouble.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Connolly explained that his actions were part of a week-long protest against TABOR. He said he was originally supposed to wear a George Washington costume on Tuesday, but the mask was too tight, so he grabbed the bin Laden costume.

Connolly has been a high-profile attorney in Maine for several years, having defended convicted murderer Dennis Dechaine in his 1989 trial. More recently, he gained notoriety for divulging President George W. Bush's drunken-driving arrest days before the 2000 presidential election

Connolly is free on $540 cash bail
