Van Halen without Sammy...
Honestly speaking, I know what Van Halen was, and having a reunion with Roth while sounds really awesome...i'm not so sure...Roth can barely move on stage anymore and has not been a cutting edge frontman since 1984, what we are gong to see is middle aged man who can barely rock.
I'd prefer to see Roth and Hagar.....or just Hagar..... at least Sammy can cover all aspects of Van Halen and David can only cover his era...And finally, we definately need to see Mikey...you can't replace him...that's like putting a Ford engine in a Chevy Car...just doesn't work...

They are all older. Dave can still rock, I do believe recently he has toned down the "act" in favor of hitting the songs the best he can.
Sammy can cover alot of aspects of VH, but he's basically been covering the SAME aspects for 20 years. It took Gary Cherone for us to hear many of those aspects live again.
Dave IS his era, nobody else can/could do it better back then. The fans want that era, and so does Wolfie (the future of VH) for that matter.
You can't replace Mike's vocals for sure, his bass playing yes you can. But you can't make Dave sing like 1984 again either.'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

Did I miss something here? Has there been a reunion announcement or are we speaking hypothetically?

Thanks for the clarification. By the way, I just read the Melodicrock bit so forgive my ignorance. Also by the way, I think this is about as likely to happen as my winning the lottery tomorrow!

Actually, Mikey can play the shit out of a bass, he was told what to play in Van Halen 90% of the time, he really does know his shit and is a solid player, his playing really shined last summer on Sammy's tour, the mother fucker was all over the place and it ruled. Not to mention I know Mikey is into other styles of playing as well which we haven't seen. And yes...his singing can't be replaced, it is part of Van Halen's signature sound.
I guess I'm not getting a warm feeling knowing DLR is coming back...Don't get me wrong, I will go to the show and try to get backstage and salute the mother fucker if it works out, and have the time of my life, especially since i was too young when CVH was together, but I will feel like something is missing and that something is definately Sammy.
Yes, Sammy didn't cover alot of CVH such as Hot for Teacher, Everbody Wants Some, Main Street, etc... so that can definately be augmented, but Shit Dave won't play any SVH!!

Achievements:
i think sammy got his closure with a good case of the heebie jeebies.
doesn't really matter who sings, or plays bass, if ed can't perform any better than in '04, i won't set foot in the arena.

To be fair, we seem to be the most well knowledged of Van Halen stuff in the world as a whole, so by default we are the most critical. We are all tortured fans, THe average listener of Van Halen probably isnt as critical as we are. Eddie Van Halen doing porn didnt really make CNN, a reunion with DLR will make Every late night show and news agent in the country.

The last time I saw DLR was on his skyscrapper tour and it was a great show. Saw him front VH for the Diver Down tour which was also a GREAT show. Will I go see him in VH again? I'll be there, but I probably won't buy my tix too far in advance because I have my doubts his voice will hold up and Ed can keep it together... and I hope I'm wrong about that.
And when the wabo's come around again, I'll see them too. I do favor Hagar at this point because I think he can get the job done better than the 2006 version of DLR.
It would be sad if Mike isn't involved, but that wouldn't keep me from going. I don't know any of these guys personally but I hope who ever is playing bass that he hold up the standard. Mikey kicks ass live.

Personally, I think Sammy gives Ed more balance and maturity than Dave. I think this rumored reunion will completely destroy what's left of Van Halen. Ed's so far gone and Dave's not far behind. I would rather them do a studio album first, test the waters and then consider a tour. Sorry, just not that thrilled about VH getting back with Dave. VH is more of a good memory than anything. Today, they are shells of who they used to be.

Guys all of this is in the AVH Book thread. I already merged a couple threads together. Please don’t create a new one. I’m closing this.
