Teen Dies After Being Stabbed On High School Campus

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 15-year-old male student died after being stabbed at a bus stop at a central Florida high school as classes let out Thursday, authorities said. Authorities arrested 17-year-old Kelvin de la Cruz in connection with the stabbing, which took place at University High School in east Orange County.

The victim was identified by deputies as 15-year-old Michael Nieves.

An argument between the two students began during lunchtime, and then continued after school at the bus stop when the suspect stabbed the victim with a roughly 3-inch serrated pocket knife, Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said.

The suspect then ran under the bus and tried to change his clothes. The suspect was caught by the school resource officer with the help of other students who pointed him out, Beary said.

"It all transpired after some kind of conflict at lunch," Beary said. "We know we have a 17-year-old perpetrator in custody. Any knife on campus is a 10-day suspension but should be a violation of state law."

At the school, stunned students milled about, some hugged each other, while others stood in a prayer circle holding hands.

Beary said the sheriff's gang unit had been called to the school to investigate whether the incident was gang-related.

The victim was transported to Florida Hospital East in critical condition after the incident, but pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Not that this is any better or any worse than any of the other school violence incidents that it seems are happening all over, but this is where my son goes to high school. He didn't say anything about it when he called me while I was driving home, but he told me about it when I finally made it here, before he went to bed. All you can do when you send 'em out the door in the morning is hope they come back in the afternoon so you can do it again tomorrow...

Whatever happened to the good old "punch?" When I was a kid, any kind of conflict ended up in an argument or a stupid fight. Now these kids have to walk on eggshells or else they'll get stabbed or shot. And, sadly, no school is safe from it.
Billy I can only imagine what you're thinking when your son goes off to school now (after this tragic event), and how you must be worrying about his safety.
It's a crazy world and it just seems to be getting worse.

A challenge is made, you meet behind the gym or in the smoking section outside (oops, forgot this isn't 1985), the word spreads, a small crowd forms, each guy gets tagged a couple of times, bada-bing....fight over.

Must be something in the bottled water.....

Words can not express the sympathy I feel for you and your wife billy, in having to deal with this. What are you supposed to do? Yank your son out of school and send him to private school? Probably not an affordable option.

I just don't get the violent stupidity that masquerades as youth culture these days. I won't go into the usual "Back in my day" type of statements because it applies absolutely no logic toward helping the situation.

I'm sorry I really can not provide any sort of help, and it angers me in the frustration of helplessness, which I'm certain you already feel. I can only offer support and consolation, billy.

Again, I'm truly sorry that I can not really help.

Thanks for the thoughts craig, and everyone else. I watched the beginning of the news after the game last night, and they showed the kid being brought in and you could hear someone ask him something like "how do you feel knowing you've really messed up your life", which, I don't know, but if he was driven to do this in the first place, he life may have already been messed up. I'm sure we'll find out all about his circumstances and how either "he was a quiet, shy kid who never said nothing or hurt anybody before" or how "his life was a struggle since (insert traumatic event here)". I don't know - it's hard for me to get my mind around killing someone because of something they said or the way they looked at me.

Thats bullshit. You simply have the right to use deadly force to protect yourself from any individual using deadly force against you. And if you do, you damn well be prepared to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt in court. I don't live in Florida, but I would definitely support such a law.

If you don't live in Florida, how are you so sure of what the law says? I'm only reporting what was on the news - including FAUX news, so spare the "liberal spin" crap - at the time the law was passed.

So with irresponsible laws like that being passed, why would anybody be surprised if some shithead teenager decides he can take it a bit further and stab someone?

I thought all these fucking schools had metal detectors now?
