Buy a VW, Get A Guitar...

Has anyone seen the new commercials featuring Slash, John Meyer and unnaturally the very British Nigel Tufnel of "Spinal Tap"? Yup, buy a VW and you get a free guitar to plug in and play through the car stereo.

The downside to this is the guitar is made by an outfit called "First Act", the same company that sold extremely crappy guitars through K-Mart.

Why not hook up with Gibson or Fender?

As usual with advertising of this nature, for the life of me I could not tell you the actual model of Volkswagon featured in the ad.

I don't see that happening.

I guess if I was already going to buy that particular model, I would do it.
But it just doesn't seem like a good sales ploy.

I don't think they are banking on the guitar being the determining factor for buying the car, it's a marketing ploy to get people to notice the car and talk about the commercials. I know it made me notice when I saw Slash playing. Pretty creative if you ask me in this current climate of annoying commercials.

I saw a show on DIY (or one of those cable channels) about First Act making a custom guitar for one of the guys from Los Lonely Boys. Apparently custom axes is some sort of specialty of the company, although I've only heard of the company through Wal Mart.

At least VW is recognizing true, classic talent. Better than having, say, Taylor Hicks sing about a VW. That Slash commercial pumps me up everytime I see it.

No kidding. My sister has a VW and it is the biggest POS on the planet. It's been recalled 8 times for engine problems, and the seat warmers literally caught fire while she was sitting in it!

If the commercial is any indication (and it should be) the system sounds like
shit. Slash or no (his playing isn't that impressive either). And honestly, how
practical is it? As mentioned, maybe it's a way for marketing to get some
rock talent involved, but it just doesn't make any damned sense otherwise;
you can't play while your driving (unless you're Steve Morse, 'nother story)
and if you really wanna rock the parking lot, wouldn't you just get a much
better sounding and portable MicroCube or something? Stupid.
