Ed's 1 time recorded guitar tests
As we all know, Eddie has thrown in cool guitar tricks and oddities in his songs all throughout his career. I don't really consider them tricks, they are just ideas he throws out to get certain sounds and ideas across with his music. I was thinking about this the other day when listening to F.U.C.K.... the majority of the time when Eddie tries something different it sticks around for a few records because he likes it or has a use for it... but other times it's the 1st and last time we hear it. Strictly going from memory, here is a list of a few things that I could think of that Eddie did on guitar one time on record and never again. (to my knowledge) Anyone got anything else?
1. In the song Pleasure Dome he has a floating Floyd Rose and does the classic Steve Vai flutter during the solo. He always uses Floyds that are locked and fixed to the bridge.
2. He plays an ES335 (Clean) on the Big Fat Money solo.
3. He played a mini guitar on little guitars (1st and last time)
4. He played an electric sitar on Ballot Or The Bullet
5. He used a Piezo pickup on Can't Stop Loving You
6. He used a double neck bass/guitar protoype for Spanked
7. He used a special two finger (left hand) and two finger (right hand) finger tapping technique on Judement day (solo)
8. He used a trans trem (2 times on 5150 and that was the end of that gadget)
9. He used a talk box on Can't Get This Stuff No More
10. The Drill .... need I say more?
11. Beer bottle under the strings (Intruder)
12. Dominant 7th open tuning for Top Jimmy
13. The infamous "Ripley" guitar track no one has heard. As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot.

well Top Jimmy was a prototype "ripley" that was a telecaster shaped body and had not only stereo effect but also able to put different effects on each string. Ed has used a ton of different guitars, a 58 flying V on drop dead legs and hot for teacher, 5150 the song, Top of the World. Don't forget an A bass string on a guitar in Good Enough. A Fender Tele on Runaround, a 57 strat on Finish What Ya Started, Roger Giffin 12 string on Poundcake, Pretty much a Ibanez Explorer on the first 3 albums... Can't forget that! If it didnt have a vibrato effect on the first 3 albums it was the Ibanez with Korina wood. Gibson SG on Dirty Movies, Gibson 12 string on Secrets, I mean Ed has used A LOT of different guitars and tunings for recording really.

Didn't Ed use a 335 on "Big Bad Bill", also?
And didn't he use a slide on that tune?Last edited by Jimmy is Cool; 10.15.06 at 04:33 PM.

It's been said MANY times before, BUT....
Just imagine all the 'gems' ,on 2-inch tape, just collecting dust at 5150.
Demos, completed songs, snippets of riffs, sounds ect......
Stuff that Eddie considers 'crap', but, may be works of 'genius' to most of us.
Especially stuff from the mid 80's thru early 90's.
Maybe someday, IF we're lucky. (But probably not)"Never is just reven spelled backwards." -House

Awards:
For #6 - that was an EBMM baritone guitar (six strings), not a bass guitar... he used the double neck (baritone 6/regular 6) live.

he also used an electric sitar on the solo to "aint talkin bout love."
ed never really tells the complete truth in interveiws so this thread is just going to turn into a debate/rumors thread.Last edited by Rick S; 10.15.06 at 09:34 PM.

Interesting... I knew a lot of this stuff, but the 335 on "Big Fat Money" was new.
And about the talkbox on "Can't Get This Stuff No More," Ed played the part, but Matthew Bruck did the voicing part on the talk box. What I read was that Eddie's "mouth didn't fit on it" (or something stupid like that).

Ed used a Rickenbacker on In a simple rhyme.
He did that three finger thing at the beginning of Man on a Mission. I heard that he actually came up with this song on a bass.
The beginning of Atomic Punk.
The trem bar dives on Judgement day.
little guitars intro where he trem picks the high e and uses his left hand to hit the notes

He also used a modified version of the two fingered thingy on Big Fat Money.
No Ripley on FWYS.

This. I was gonna say this whole big thing but whatever. Sam is tuned down but the history of his voice is still there. It's respectable still. We're never going "wtf was that"? We're always...
