Default It is a truly sad day.

My family and I had to put or beloved dog, Duke (a Bernese Mountain Dog) to sleep today after learning earlier this week that he had an inoperable tumor in his kidney that had metastisized throughout his body.

Duke would have been 8 years old on December 28 and we received him as a wedding gift from my wife's aunt and uncle back in February of 1999.

He was a fun, loyal, intelligent dog and he will deeply be missed.

Goodbye good friend, rest in peace. We love you and miss you.

I feel your pain man, I had to put a cat of mine to sleep about 7 years ago, we had her since i was about 9 and i was then 20, so it was really hard. Like Duke, she had an inoperable tumor, only this one was in her intestines. I still miss her alot after all these years. Remember the good times you had with him, that helped ease the pain for me.

I know how that is. We had to put our old dog Whipper to sleep a few years ago. She was the best dog we/I ever had. I remember how I told her goodbye before she went to the vet and how I cried like a baby after I left. Truly was a sad day for me.

    Atomic Punk,

I know the pain you are feeling I had to put my dog to sleep back in April due to a tumor in her lung. Its hurts so bad when we lose a pet, its hard to describe to those that are not pet lovers. Know that you gave your dog a great life and did the right thing bu letting him go.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

And thats about what its worth.

Almost the exact same thing happened to us a few years back. Ours died on New Years Eve no less. Sorry to hear of your loss, it can be as bad as losing a family member.

I am so sorry for your loss. My Pug, Otis (yes, the "Otis" in my screen-name), is 9 and I get choked up just thinking about him not being around, some day. Best of luck.

Yea it was as bad as a family member for me. I wasn't upset when either of my grandparents passed away b/c I wasn't close to either of them. I felt like something was wrong w/me b/c I was more upset over a dog than my grandmother. But my friend put it in perspective for me: a dog never lets you down, never says something to hurt your feelings, never plays favorites. They are just a dog, plain and simple.

So sorry for your loss. I, too, have been there and I know it sucks to lose a pet. A few years ago my Doberman, Kayla, died during surgery after getting hit by a car. The whole thing just sucked, especially after the vet told us she'd be fine.
It'll be tough on you for a while, but time will heal your wounds. I thought I'd never get over my loss and it certainly took a long time, but we've managed. Of course we still miss her, that'll never change.
    My condolences.
