    Sweet !

thanks man, I enjoyed that. Always curious as to why the 'editor' of music clips decides to show anything other than the guitarist when it's time for the solo - especially when it's Eddie fuckin' Van Halen !!

I'll tell ya what, the last song of the set is TOTW I believe. The band breaks out in a total jam at the end and Sam sings some lyrics off the top of his head-at least that's what I think he was doing, it's awsome. It's funny cause when the band starts jammin Sam says "I don't know what the Hell's going on" and a minute later he's belting out some lyrics, it's only about a minute and half but it's awsome.

If I am not mistaken, this was a free show because of a cancelation.

I think they were off tour, thus the beards and crap.

I have this entire show on video cassette. Its pretty cool, especially if your from Dallas. There's very little crowd noise because the sound is straight from the soundboard. There's also very little bass. During Finish What Ya Started, Eddie messes up the lyrics, which was pretty funny. They play A Political Blues which they rarely played. Sammy is kind of raw and says "fuck" about every other word in between songs.

Yes, that jam at the end of Top of the World is awesome! Its very short, but its some heavy stuff. I always wished they'd made that a full song on an album because it kicked ass.

It was recorded in December of '91 in the West End in Dallas. I think they were on the road for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. They happened to be close to Dallas and had some days off so they made a quick stop. It was supposed to be a make up show for a date they cancelled on the OU812 Tour.

Actually, the full story is this:

In 1988, Van Halen headlined the Texas Jam which was basically the Dallas leg of the Monsters of Rock tour. Also on the bill that day were Dokken, Metallica, and Scorpions. That's an indication of how long ago this was, because Metallica was only the 3rd band to perform out of 5.

Anyway, Van Halen played only about 50-60 minutes. Sammy's voice really started to give out. One of the last songs they played was "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder, and you could barely hear his voice. I was in the front 3 rows.

Sammy PROMISED to come back to Dallas one day and do a free show. When we heard this, we are all like "FUCK YEAH...SAMMY ROCKS...VAN HALEN ROCKS". You get the picture.

By the time me and my buddy got back to our car, we were like -- What kind of bullshit was that by Sammy. We both doubted that Sammy would ever come through on his promise.

But 3 years later he did. In spring of 1991, Van Halen came back and did the legendary free show in the Dallas West End. They only played about an hour, but this was taken as the hour they didn't complete in 1988.

I still remember the main rock radio station back then (97.1 The Eagle). They kept talking about this HUGE annoucement. They made the annoucement only 1 day before Van Halen actually played.

But word still got around quick. There are reports of 50,000 people showing up to see Van Halen play for free. There were people all over rooftops, awnings, and latched onto lightpoles. It was a MAD HOUSE. If you've never been to Dallas West End, you simply cannot comprehend 50,000 people fitting into a relatively small space.

Even if that police report number is exaggerated by a factor of 2, and only 25,000 people were there, then it is still huge. There is simply is not that much space, and you cannot imagine how many people were cramped into that spot -- all to see the Mighty Van Halen!

I will always have respect for Sammy because of what he did in 1991. Coming through on a very big promise, even though most people had probably forgotten about it and would not have blamed Van Halen if they never did the free show.
