Police: Motorcycle Stunt Results In Fatal Crash

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The performance of motorcycle stunts on a Hartford road Thursday afternoon led to a crash that left one dead.

A motorcycle's operator was killed after the crash on Jennings Road.

Police said the driver of the motorcycle was weaving through traffic, popped a wheelie and when he came down, went through the minivan.

According to eyewitness Richard Mullowney, the motorcycle operator was weaving in and out of traffic when a car turned in front of him, causing him to crash into the minivan. Mullowney said the impact was so severe, the motorcycle went through the van.

"The motorcyclist was ejected. You can tell by the damage that he was fatally wounded as a result," said Hartford Police Dep. Chief Neil Dryfe.

Paramedics responded to the scene and trasported the motorcyclist to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the male victim has yet to be released.

"It just happened so quickly ... he was on the ground," Mullowney said.

The eastbound section of Jennings Road was closed following the crash. Weston Street at Jennings Road was closed as well.

There's a Yamaha dealership two buildings down from where I work. I swear, some of the crazy shit I see in front of my store that people leaving there are doing... I saw a guy doing a wheelie almost perpendicular to the ground with the rider leaned forward doing about 75 or so... In fact today, two guys were hammerin' out of there doing at least 80 or so...

Let 'em do it, as long as they take no one with them.

When I started reading that I was completely expecting the motorcycle rider to be ok and someone in the van to have been killed. That tends to be the normal pattern for these kind of incidents. In this case it is just the thinning of the herd.

Don't have a bike. Don't like it when people do tricks on the street.

But it does suck that this guy died. I hope everyone in the van is okay. I bet the driver of that van (although through no fault of his or her own) will feel guilt for the rest of their lives because they were involved in someone losing their life. It's a lose-lose situation.

You know, this is similar to the issues of street racing, burnouts, etc. If you want to do this stuff, cool! (I'm a gearhead, so I'm for it). But I'm old enough and smart enough to know that you do it in a controlled environment (i.e. OFF THE STREETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). How many people have to get hurt and killed for people to realize this?! Um, I can throw the whole drinking and driving debate in with this as well.

There are drag strips that you can go to just about near every major metro area. Some are even open during the week. If you are that cool, take it over there.

If you are a bike freak and want to do stunts, you can find places where noone else is to go do your tricks. If you can't, ask around because there are places for that too.

Okay, now that I've said everything that everybody already knows, soapbox closed. Sorry, I've just had too many friends die a PREVENTABLE death over the years.

With so many clueless imbeciles driving around, driving carelessly while yacking on cell-phones (which should be a banned practice), it's a wonder anyone would take such an idiotic chance stunting in traffic.

Yeah, yeah, there's the excuse of the "motorcycle as penis substitute" metaphor, and all of the "hey, look at me!" attention getting bullshit that goes along with it. It still defies logic.

With road death at such a high premium today, one would think folk would endeavor to act with a tad more sense. Instances such as the one posted illustrate that this is certainly not the case.
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
