Finish What Ya Started.
Let me say that when I first bought OU812 (I think it was early summer of 1988) I popped in the tape and enjoyed much of the album. However, when I flipped the tape to side 2 and got 3 songs in I was flabberghasted.
Van Halen/Hagar (whatever you choose to call Sammy era Halen) doing a COUNTRY/BLUESY song? WTF!!!!
At the time (I was 14) I thought: "Oh man, this sucks!".....
But let me just say that as the years have rolled on, I haver grown to really love this song. Even Hagar Detractors have to admit it's got some great funk and some great lyrics in it, to say nothing of the killer fingerpickin' EVH does on the guitar in it.
Hey, many people can say Sammy had his share of "cheesy ballads" but this track is not one of them.
Finish What Ya Started, is a DAMN fine piece of music: Lyrically, musically. What a groove. What an attitude.
Back in 1988 when I was 14 I hated it.
In 2001 at 28, I LOVE it.
Like a great jazz record, some music takes years to be appreciated.
I just wanted to share this. Does anyone here agree/disagree ?

for FWYS. It's got a bad-ass video to back it up too. Didn't care to much for Sammy's altered lyrics in that song on RHRN, but I dug this one right from the beginning.
Just another sign of the exploratory album that OU812 was. The first time Eddie was really allowed to delve into different styles of music on a Van Halen record."Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."

hain23x: you have to admit OU812 (although far from being a perfect record) has the most amount of different styles on it of all the VH records....
There is so much variety on that album.
albeit the sound is miserable and tinny (we've already discussed the need to re-master this album) and the lyrics in certain songs are just downright cheesy... But when the band succeeded on this album: songs like "Mine All Mine", "Cabo Wabo", and "Finish What Ya Started": The results kicked ass.
Sure there is variety on some of the DLR albums....
"Sinner's Swing!" is certainly much different than "Push Comes To Shove"
"Drop Dead Legs" is much different than "I'll Wait"
But having said that, I think the album with the most diversity (good and bad perhaps) is OU812.
It's a record that I have to say, I usually place towards the bottom of my list (excepting the fact that it features one of my fav. VH songs of all time: "Cabo Wabo"
However lately I have grown to appreciate this album more and more....

I've always loved it. The RHRN version is awesome...the way they jammed at the end. When I first got OU812 I thought the song was cheesier than the live version. But it's cool. Grew on me too.

Didn't realise the lyrics was altered on the live version~!, since I don't really concentrate on Sammy's singing.
But the live is better for Haase

I like FWYS but it's not one of my favorites on OU812. I also prefer the live version more.

I have always loved Finish What Ya Started, I prefer the original to the live version.

VS, I love shrooms but never liked Phish. I admit they are good musicians but they are boring. Especially live. No melody that I could tell, just mindless endless jamming. I'd be very surprised if...
