    Default Great parable...

    Received this in an email:

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife
    open a package.

"What food might this contain?" The mouse wondered - he was devastated to
    discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: "There is a
mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I
can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I
    cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the
house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is
nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow a nd said "There is a mousetrap in the house!
There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my
    nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the
    farmer's mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a
    mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not
see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the
farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home
with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the
farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard! For the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with
her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her
funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of
    them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't
concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We
are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one
another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

REMEMBER: EACH OF US IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHER PERSON'S TAPESTRY; OUR
LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.

RIGHT NOW animals are being beaten in a circus, burned and poisoned in a lab, shocked at a cattle auction, electrocuted on a fur farm, starved in an egg factory, suffocated on a fishing line, caged for life in a zoo, and otherwise denied all that is natural to them…ANIMAL RIGHTS NOW!
    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

-Derrick Jensen, "What We Leave Behind"

"You know what's weird to me is Christians who are against the death penalty. After all, if it weren't for the death penalty, we wouldn't celebrate Easter!"

I was enjoying a tasty ribeye steak at a Japanese steakhouse one evening when I noticed the young lady sitting across from me was wearing a shirt that said "PETA". I found that odd considering the massive side of beef she was consuming.

It wasn't til she finished her meal and leaned back in her chair that I noticed the rest of the shirt:

    People Eating Tasty Animals.

I'm all for animal rights, yet in the long run...they are just as fucked as humanity.

Over the weekend here in S. Florida, yet another incident involving a homeless man being beaten and stabbed took place, in Ft. Lauderdale. The three youths that were caught and charged with the crime had been videotaped breaking into Stranahan High School a few months ago. They are all around the age of 15, and proudly smiled for their mug shots. This most likely will acelerate their "street-cred".

This follows on the heals of another beating of a homeless person, this resulting in the man's death.

Mankind is butchering, raping and murdering itself at an alarming level every single day, throughout the planet. Sometimes this is done in the name of religion, other times through greed, many times through general indifference. In an era where the quality, or even dignity of human life is treated with such utter contempt, what feasible chance should animals, or those that care for their welfare, expect on this planet?

I'm glad that a goat was not used in that parable or I would be very alarmed. On Labor Day weekend I took a pocket knife and popped the jugular of a very plump red haired goat that we were to dine on later in the evening for an authentic mexican fiesta. If there were a goat in the parable, I may be haunted by the image of it's skin being pulled from it's flesh and the end result of chopping it in to 1/8ths, or the eyes staring at me from the hole in the ground as I shoveled dirt over the dismembered head. I could have been tormented in my soul while scarfing down its flesh in a taco knowing that only 12 hours prior, it was a happy little goat, thriving in the prime of its life.

    Whew.

Now, the pig we put on the rotisserie a couple weeks before that? Man, I might have some issues there....

Isn't PETA organizing a protest against one of the Six Flags theme parks for having a cockroach eating contest?

That is why PETA is a joke.

You love Jesus, right? I wonder if his message of universal compassion would allow him to walk into a factory farm and be okay with seeing animal's throats slit.

Seriously though, I'm all for animal rights.

I'd personally like to give cattle the right to vote.

Son, Jesus wasn't a vegan. Universal compassion? His message was directed towards people, about people.

seenbad, and everyone else, really--I only hope that God, as a being superior to us, treats us with more mercy than we treat those creatures we deem inferior.
You believe in God? And you don't know what he says about the matter?

Mercy comes in the form of grace and forgiveness in the acceptance of his son and the knowledge that it was the spilling of his blood in the place of our own....it's a little deeper than what we eat while we're here. Mileage may vary on your personal interpretation of God, and it sounds as though you may be in the middle of concocting your own version. Slippery slope! Careful!

Animals are God's provision for our nutritional needs.

According to your religion, God gave Adam and Eve all they needed to eat--the plants and fruit-and-seed-bearing trees. It was only after the fall that animals were killed for food.

Plants have all we need nutritionally. Everything we need to survive sprouts up from the earth.

We should be working to get back to the Garden of Eden, not running farther and farther away from it.
