Used Peavey Classic 30 or 50. You can't go wrong.

Excellent choice that is. If you could only throw another couple a hunskies at it, Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue. Tone of Christ himself.

You know the best tone I ever had was with that little bandmaster cranked to 10. Edward Van Halen, 1980, Guitar Player Magazine.

Bigger Marshall from MG series would be the best IMO. They have the best clear tone from all non-tube amps I've ever tried. Check MG50 - it's a suberb value for it's price.

Just don't buy anything from Line6 if you want to play clean+stomp boxes

to get a rough idea of whats available for the range... go to musiciansfriend.com and select amps... then on the left navigator, you can pick price ranges. if you are thinking used, put in a slightly higher range and then hit ebay and see if you can get a hit on anything you think looks good.
and of course come back with any specific questions to this forum and hopefully someone will have some experiance with what you are looking at.

    good luck.

I have an AVT 20 and that amp has very great tone. its also much louder than almost any other 20 watt amp. the AVT 20 is loud enough for gigs too. use mine all the time live and has great clean tone too. Try finding an amp used too. saves alot of money and the amp still sounds the same as one new.

If you can scrape together a few extra coins, you could go for Ed's rig from '86. Although it may not provide enough wattage.

Not Line6. I have Spider 2 and I love it, but as I said before - it's clean tone sucks, and with pedals it would sound horrid.

Yeah, good point on the pedals thing. Good Amp for a low budget IMO, but not if you're running a bunch stuff through it. I've got one (Spider 1) that I bacisally run dry. I tried running my Digitech GNX3 through it and it does sound like shit. Colours the sound big time. It's impossible to get a clean/neutral/transparant signal for "do all" stomp boxes.
