When I watch the 1996 stuff, I always get the impression that there is some kind of connection between Alex and Dave. Kind of like a long lost partying compadre who, even if you haven't seen them for a long time, you click through sense of humor, jokes, etc. Mike always seems to be looking at Dave and rearing up, clenching his fists. Eddie seems to be uncomfortable and wishing he were somewhere else. The other strange thing, through time and distance from that moment in 1996, is that they seem relatively young to me (at least from my vantage point as a graybeard I guess).

It's weird to reflect on the buzz that was. That reunion had all the potential in the world, and unlike what Ed said last week, he and Alex are not 100% Van Halen. It's all 25% for me, and Hagar and Roth are interchangable. 1996 and then again in 2004, Eddie ruined it. I'm not taking shots here guys, but it's pretty plain to see.

How could you say that Eddie ruined it in 1996? I think this interview came after the infamous "you better be wearing a cup" incident. And you could see Eddie's dis-interest in this interview. He kept on looking away where as inthe past interviews he is always attentive to whats being said. HE knew that it was not going to happen with Dave then, Alex however IMO hadn't fully grasped what had gone on bewtween Dave and Eddie yet or didn't even know.
In 2004 I still don't think that Eddie was all for touring with Sammy again and he kept his distance.

I got the opposite impression. I thought Al seemed as though he HATED the fact that Dave was standing there and was just waiting for him to fuck up. Mike looked like he knew that they were doing something shady and was wishing he just quit instead of going through with it (but it was too late) and Ed seemed like he was somehow finally getting his revenge on Dave knowing the whole time that Gary (or Mith Malloy depending on who you believe) was the next Van Halen singer. Leading Dave on only to pull the rug from under him like he felt Dave did to VH in 85.

Just my opinion and speculation, who the hell knows what these nutjobs were really thinking?

Too bad Al doesn't generally have more to say about this in the decade that has passed.

Must suck to have your entire musical career since 2000 locked up at 5150 with little chance of seeing the light of day.

have always been a MA fan, i even met MA, but this interview, and the thing where DLR is onstage bantering about, MA looks like a DICK. like when someone makes a joke and a hater makes fun of the joke like 'wow!, i can't believe you said that!' 'is that supposed to be funny'

don't get me wrong, i love MA but in those clips he looks a bit rough...

I think this interview was before that incident backstage. This seems to be shortly after they left the stage. Ed spoke as if that happened later after the show taking questions from actual press people. Sounded to me like the plan was agreed by the whole band to take "baby steps" to see how things would work. But then once news leaked out about them working with Dave the press just ran with it and so did Dave. Hence the VMA Dave antics & MTV "Welcome Back" commercials.

Somebody should post the press interview after this one. The one where Eddie gets pissed off.

As for this Kurt Loader interview, it looked like everything was still on track, and for a thin sliver of time, it maybe it could have worked with Dave.

I would love to see the interview after this one. But watching this one, it seems to me that every guy in this band (maybe excluding Dave) knows this really isn't going anywhere. Nobody is willing to commit that they're really together, or much of anything other than the music is good and they're gonna make two videos.
In hindsight, it's plain to me these guys don't really believe much is gonna happen beyond this day.
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

"I sense that some of our newer passengers may be nervous due to the sudden turbulence. Please be seated, this is simply a normal part of the periodic ride.
I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.

It's just my own conclusion, judging from Ed's past with singers and Dave's book, things like that. I think Dave is living in a fantasy world, thinking he knows how to do everything so well, because clearly he is to blame as well. I just don't see how Ed's position in any of these break-ups is justified, he's way too selfish and needs to look at the bigger picture of the band, not himself all the time.

I beleive they wanted to make it work with Dave, I really do. There is a Guitar magazine interview with Ed where he goes over the process of recording MWM & CGTSNM and Ed remarks how long it was to get CGTSNM out of Dave and how Dave was so apologetic & thankful to Ed for being patient.

I think thats when Ed realized getting back with Dave would be nothing more than a nostalgia tour and he did not want to do that, at least not at that point. Thats when they starting auditions, and I still think Dave was a consideration, but they felt that Malloy and then Chereone were better fits long term.

I said it then and its still true. And its the understatement of the century, but if Dave was not the permanent new singer, they never should have appeared publicly with him. I know there were other forces behind it, and wasn't VH's idea, but still.

Have I seen my last one?
