DLR @ Foxwoods, CT
I just got home from the Diamond's show at Foxwoods Casino in CT. I didn't even know he was playing there. A buddy called me with a last minute idea to go, so I figured what the hell. I must admit that of the three singers, DLR is my least favorite. But I will try to give you an honest review here and what I think it means for any future involvement with VH:
Stage: Very simple, with drums on the risers and Marshall speakers on both sides. That's it. No fluff or shit all over the stage. Very cool lights.
Band: Very tight and a good sound. The lead guitarist was basically an EVH imitation, which I don't really find interesting to listen to, but he was very good. What I really liked was that there was a rhythm guitarist (from Japan) who was jamming on a Telecaster. It made for a great sound having that rhythm guitar in there. Bass player was really into it, looked like Matt Sorum with a bass.
Songs: Opened with Hot For Teacher, and did the hits: Panama, Unchained, Runnin', Jump, Cradle, Jamie's Cryin', You Really Got Me, ATBL, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, Ice Cream Man. I think he only did three solo tunes, the rest was VH.
DLR's voice/singing: DLR was my first concert back in 7th grade (Skyscraper tour), so this was the first time I heard Roth live and would have an educated opinion. I thought he would sound like shit and I would be embarassed for him. But his voice was pretty strong and he hit some good notes up there. He projected well and overall sounded pretty good. But he uses a lot of vibrato and sings short phrases instead of the usual melody. It almost sounded like a lounge singer at times.
My opinion on the whole thing: If he did less shaking his ass and concentrated more on nailing the songs, this would have been one of the best shows I have heard. The great majority of the people loved his shtick, but I love live music for the music, not the showmanship. His outfit and most of his singing just kept reminding me of a lounge singer or rock and roll with too much of a jazz singer-influence. But overall it was a fun show. When he talked to the audience, he was fucking hilarious. He told a girl in the front row that she was so sweet, she "must shit sugar." He really looked happy and seemed very thankful waving to the crowd after the last song. When they went into Runnin with the Devil, the place went nuts, and I really then appreciated the gift that VH has/had with bringing joy to people and making them happy, even if it was for two hours. I wonder if EVH realizes that.
With Van Halen? The '98 tour with Gary was basically all music and no talking to the audience. Just song after song. This show was like that, but with some talking/joking around. I have a feeling that Dave is touring with a heavy VH setlist because he is warming up for a gig with the brothers. But if he wants it to be big, he needs to sing more of the song, definitely lose the spinning kick that isn't happening anymore, and lose the jazz singer style. If he does that, then get ready to rock. If he keeps the same style, it will not match with the brothers playing, which will be at a much higher level, and it will sound like shit.
Sorry for the really long post here. Overall it was a fun time. Hope this is useful in some way.

I saw Dave on the Sam and Dave tour back 2002 and he looked like shit with his long thin hair dyed platinum and he sounded okay, but after listening to some of his recent singing he IMO is sounding better now than 4 years ago.

I went last night and I loved it!
You can tell that Dave is having fun, and it makes for a great show.
I was wearing a VH shirt, and I got approached by a bunch of people in the casino after the show. The diehards thought Dave was great of course, but the coolest thing was that the casual fans and non-fans were raving about him. It was a fun atmosphere, and there was a lot of smiles and a definite sense of community.
My take on the whole thing- Dave makes people happy.

Jesus Christ its a post like this that just pisses me off. I saw Dave Friday in Indy for the 5th time overall. I have seen him over many eras. I took three buddies with me that have not heard him since VH and we all agreed he is sounding better than ever. It is absolutly ludicrous to go to a DLR show and expect a CD quality "Skyscraper, 1984, VH1 Show!" I dont want to hear a show that sounds just like the CD thats what makes the show fun and entertaining. This is the exact reason DLR gets these kind of reviews because people go to his show and see him at 51 years old and expect to see a 25 year old Dave! In case some didn't get the memo its 2006 and Dave is singing better than ever!

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers here, just my take on the show. If you read my first post here, I was surprised at how good his voice was at this point. But Dave defintely is not singing better than ever, and that is just a fucking fact. 51 or 21, his singing style is too Las Vegas, judging from last night. The condition of his voice seems fine to me. I am not looking for the live versions to be just like the album, but Panama is not the fucking cha cha. If he reunites with the brothers and focuses more on singing than grabbing his balls, I will be at that show and loving it.

I thought about going but I ended doing some stuff with my family. I'm glad to hear that DLR put on a good show and that his singing was better than a few years ago. Hopefully, he and Ed will talk and put something together.

Achievements:
I saw Dave 4 years ago the last time... His singing wasn't spot on, but it was good. He needs to drop the stupid schtick or at least come up with new. christ how many years has he been doing the "shit sugar" line?
I am starting to think though, with the way eddie has flown off the edge, and the screwball Dave is, you are more likely to see a CVH (minus Mikey) more likely then VH Mach II out on tour any time soon. The other half is more like the "sane half"

Dune part 2 I love this movie but I keep falling asleep. I didn't expect Austin Butler and forgot about Josh B. it's such a simple but long story. Don't trust the women. I still got about 30...
