Default Van Halen vs. Three Stooges

We have all heard of the Lincoln-Kennedy similarities. I started thinking about my two favorite "groups" in the world. Van Halen and The Three Stooges. Here are some of the similarities:

    1. Both had six actual members:

Three Stooges - Moe (Moses Horwitz), Larry (Louis Feinberg), Curly (Jerome Horwitz), Shemp (Samuel Horwitz), Joe (Joe Besser) and Curly-Joe (Joseph Wardell aka Joe DeRita).

Van Halen - Edward Van Halen (Edward Lodewijk Van Halen), Alex Van Halen (Alexander Arthur Van Halen), Micheal Anthony (Michael Anthony Sobolewski), David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar (Samuel Roy Hagar) and Gary Cherone (Gary Francis Caine Cherone).

    2. Most prefer the original line-up

Three Stooges - although Curly was actually a replacement for Shemp and then Shemp replaced Curly after he had a stroke, the common "original" line-up is thought of as Moe, Larry & Curly.

Van Halen - Van Halen's original lineup with Eddie, Alex, Michael and Dave is considered by most to be the apex of a rock band and is called "Classic Van Halen"

    3. The "star" of the show was not necessarily the person in charge.

Three Stooges - Curly is most peoples favorite Stooge

Van Halen - Even with Dave's antics, Eddie became a guitar God.

    4. There is/was an unspoken leader
This ties in with number 3.

Three Stooges - Although Curly is the favorite Stooge, Moe was certainly "the guy in charge" both on and off screen.

Van Halen - Roth reportedly was telling the band how to dress. With three different lead singers throughout the years, Eddie clearly calls the shots.

    5. There have been two constants in each incarnation

Three Stooges - Moe and Larry

Van Halen - Eddie and Alex. Both Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar are in the group "The Other Half."

    6. The second incarnation of the group was not as good as the first

Three Stooges - What is considered the original line-up is considered the best. Moe, Larry & Curly. I used to cringe when I was a kid, watching three episodes back to back and two of them featured Shemp or even worse, Joe or Curly-Joe. Through the years, I have really grown to like Shemp and realized that he was a great choice to follow Curly. He does not get enough credit. Different does not automatically equal "bad." Everything after that was an attempt to mimic these two.

Van Halen - David Lee Roth was a tough act to follow. Love him or hate him, he put on a show and made Van Halen what it is. When he left and Sammy "I Can't Drive 55" Hagar took over the microphone, It was not immediately well received by me. The intial single, "Why Can't This Be Love?" was lukewarm at best and it sounded to me as if Hagar was trying to imitate Roth on this song to ease us into the transition. Once he got going though he was just as talented and an excellent choice to follow Roth. Different does not automatically equal "bad."

    Excellent comparison!

    Out of curiosity, one question:
The second incarnation of Van Halen was more successful than the first (all of VH's albums with Sammy hit #1; none of VH's albums with Dave did).
Can the same be said of the Stooges?

Isn't there a guy who's bald in 3 stooges? That's the DLR of the group, right?

There's a hilarious episode called 'Malice In The Palice' which they made with Shemp. Basically, they're running an Arabian restuarant when 2 diamond hunters come in to take their orders. Larry, who is the chef, chases both a cat and dog out into the dining area after they were nosing around in the kitchen and takes them back into the kitchen with body language suggesting slaughter. The next thing the customers hear, while awaiting for the arrival of their meals, are the sounds of Larry's chopping of meat with simultaneous animal screams of the cat and dog, which were actually the result of Larry accidently stepping on both their tales. Larry brings the orders out while both the cat and dog run back into the dining room and unknowingly park themselves under the ordered table. So what happens next is that the 2 diamond hunters are poking their meals with the knife and fork and at the same time both the cat and dog under table are meowing and barking.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

Success can be measured many ways other than number one albums. On most lists for the top 100 albums, you will see Van Halen 1, but rarely does a Hagar-era album make it on a list despite being a number one album.

Oh, I ain't takin' it seriously at all. I was just making the analogy that Gary, like Curly Joe, was in the least respected incarnation of both groups. I don't think anybody will dispute that. At least not w/o a swift poke in the eye & slap on the face.

Okay, so with that explanation, let's validate the rest...

    Moe Brains of the Stooges
Eddie Van Halen Brains of Van Halen

Larry: underappreciated, but essential. Important player. Excellent straightman to allow the others to show off.
Michael Anthony: underappreciated foundation for the band. Allows Eddie & lead singer to show off.

Curly: Talented, childlike clown who makes funny noises
David Lee Roth: Talented, childlike clown who makes funny noises

Shemp: Had big shoes to fill with Curly leaving
Sammy Hagar: Had big shoes to fill with David Lee Roth leaving. (It is a bonus that Shemps' real name is Samuel just like Sammy's.)

Joe: Kind of hangs out in the background and takes orders from Moe.
Alex Van Halen: Kind of hangs out in the background and takes orders from Eddie.

Curly-Joe:The least appreciated/respected Stooge who may have been funny, but did not fit the historical mold of the Three Stooges.
Gary Cherone: The least appreciated/respected member of Van Halen who is very talented, but does not fit the historical mold of Van Halen.

    Here is another.
    Three Stooges had TED Healy;
    Van Halen had TED Templeton
