    Default Floyd Rose Setup

Alright, im having a hell of a time with the floyd rose. It was fun, but then stuff started breaking, so i'm hoping some of you floyd rose junkies can help me out.

I am using a Ping liscensed floyd, I know liscensed is a bad word when it comes to a floyd rose, but most people say the ping is the same as the original, if not better. That may be untrue, and thats my problem, but I was just checkin if its me thats messin things up.

The little black screws on the nut are stripped. So thats either overtightening on my part, or bad manufacturing. I don't know any floyd rose buffs in my area, so I really don't know how hard I should tighten the screws. But it seems that even if I tighten the hell out of em, I'll still go a little out of tune; my 6th string will progressively go out of tune until the fine tuner is down all the way and I have to unscrew and retune. Because they're stripped, i'm using vice grips on the screws, which sucks. My allen wrench that came with the bridge also snapped in half when I was tightening the screws at the bridge, so its vice grip city down there too.

So, just any tips, anything at all to improve the situation. It seems as though I may have to buy a new locking nut due to the stripped screws and the threads on one of the holes getting messed up (overtightening?). I know for sure overtightening is an issue, because everywhere I have read said it shouldn't be super tight, but I have been tightening until it would stay in tune, which didn't work anyway. Any suggestions are welcome.

I would probably buy a new locking nut... you do not have to over tighten them by any means. make sure the allen wrench you use is the correct size, other than that, I have never had a string slip through and one of my nuts is 15 years old now.

I don't have an answer to your question, but if your allen wrench snapped, you're using WAAAY too much pressure.

Tighten the nut with your bare fingertips. Then give it a quarter turn with the allen wrench, if that. You don't want to turn it to the point where it's stopping, let alone snapping.

That won't work for you now, though, because you've ruined your nut. You've probably got trenches dug in there.

Yeah, thats what I have been reading. It wasn't staying in tune very well, if at all, if I didn't tighten crap out of it, so i'm going to assume that was a problem with the materials used to manufacture the nut. I'm hoping a new original nut will solve that problem.

Do not tighten the crap out of it, you don't need to do that. I would definitely get a new nut, you've ruined that one.

it sounds to me like you have definatly overtightened them they ned to be finger tight then only nipped with the allen key over tightening will cause all the problems you have described, the poor tuning will no doubt be caused by grooves worn into the nut by too much pressure and the same goes for the stripped threads.
the best solution is to purchase a new locking nut from your local dealer or if u are handy with tools cut some new threads with a tpa and die set but to be honest a new nut would be considerably less time consuming and less complicated
