neck job??

okay so im askin for a little help here, i have an old kramer beretta (around 83 84 vintage) its a little beat up has some cigerette burns in it a few dents etc the volume pot is screwed unless its on full so im gonna get to work on it so im gonna build a 5150 replica im good with the electrical side of things and can handle a soldering iron etc and i can set a guitar up properly but havingnever completely stripped a guitar down and left it that way for a length of time i was wondering....what do i do with the neck when i take it off??
should i loosen the truss rod or leave it as it is and just set it up when i rebuild the guitar??

any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated (i have asked some pro's for help but they all wanted paying for their yes or no answers!!)

i was told over at ebmm that if you take a neck off that is gonna be sitting loosen the truss rod all the way then turn it back maybe a few turns. that way the neck has no pressure from the rod and rests in a natural state.
