why does everyone need to wear a cup around ed?
did he kick sam or something?
you'll have to excuse me but living in england and having only just been pointed in the direction of this site im a bit (ok maybe a few years) behind on the news

In an interview on MTV just after VH (with Dave Roth) had appeared on th MTV "Video Music Awards" show, Ed Van Halen related what had gone on backstage regarding a dust-up with Roth. He was angry with Roth's antics during an acceptance speech by the "performer" Beck, and further pissed when Roth alledgedly told EVH that the evening was "about him " (Roth meaning himself).

Ed Van Halen's comment in the interview was that if Roth ever spoke to him that way again, he'd "better be wearing a cup", meaning EVH would manfully kick (or to some minds fondle) Mr. Roth's testicles.

No further word regarding Mr. Roth's fashion accessories or Mr. Van Halen's shoes, other than both are in dire need of an update.

aaaah i think i remeber seeing the show and thinking what an ass dave was being, but being in england and vh not being important over here (exept to a few of us) i didnt hear about the backstage bust up

Dave was NOT being an ass (any more than usual). Ed and Al were just being a couple of pussies that night.
From the opening bell you could see the writing on the wall. Ed and Al standing there with arms crossed and frowning. So lame.
WE ALL NEEDED A CUP THAT NIGHT. The VH bros collectively kicked us all in the nuts with their "Dave's back" publicity stunt that night. Yeah, they'll deny that Dave was ever really back, though unfortunately the joke was on us and Dave.

Gotta agree with most of what was said here. Dave was being an ass, but you're correct not any more than usual. You get what you get with Dave, and everybody knows that going in. Backstage, both Ed and Dave have admitted at least that Dave didn't want Ed talking about his hip (to me, that's an ass but not surprising coming from Dave). I'm assuming that truly happened.
On the VH bros side of it you're dead on. These guys fucked over their fans royally trying to do a little promotion for a best of record. Very, very dumb and stupid move on their part. To get the Dave or grave crowd that excited and kick them in their collective cups -- not smart at all. Not to mention the alienation of some of the Van Hagar era fans.
Ed and Al had their heads up their asses, but karma has a way. And the boys have been living with that karma every since, it seems to me. Essentially Van Halen was a dead band following that night.
They are nothing but what EVH has always said he hated. A nostalgia act, and they've got nobody to blame but themselves for it. Should've put Van Halen to rest after the 1996 debacle. Maybe formed a new band with Cherone under a new name, fine.
Had they done that, the reunion in 2004 would've meant so much more. Or a reunion with Dave would've meant so much more. Now, it means next-to-nothing to most anybody outside of this forum.

I agree belikemike. That's the night that VH the rock band died. And the VH bros have no one but themselves to blame for it. They show up every few years to juice it for another cool million, but that's just Ed/Al revisiting their nostalgia act $$ and becomming the very thing they always said that they would not become. It's nothing new. Ed's obviously not happy at all doing it either.
I am one with my VH cup. It's standard VH attire since 96'. I go nowhere near the bros without wearing my cup. They're cheap-shots and will kick you when you're not looking.

I might dig this whole new VH pornography gig. I'm just afraid that my boner would get terribly sore having to wear this damned cup!

The part that Eddie said really made him mad is when he told Dave he wouldnt mention his hip in any more interviews for the night and Dave supposedly said "You better fuckin not". I have a hard time believing it really went down like that but who knows.

Don't get me wrong. If I were losing a fight then anything would be fair game. But I'm reserving the nut kicking and general groin stuff - as well as hair pulling, bighting, eye gouging, hurting of feelings, etc. - for when I really need it. Is there no code of honor among men anymore?
