It is what it was
I was listening to Van Halen II (“Light up the sky” to be specific) on the way in to work today and realized something. If you want to enjoy VH listen to one of the Classic Albums, Van Hagar albums of choice, or VH III. I'm not bashing albums done after 1984. I enjoy all of them. My point here is that VH as a band in 2006 does not exist. It's a memory…….That I will enjoy for the rest of my life.
The best real world examples I can give here is Led-Zeppelin & the Beatles. I think these two bands explain everything. Jimmy page can't play like he used to and either can Ed. Led Zeppelin will not tour as Led Zeppelin and either should Van Halen. This includes the 2004 tour and the sad attempts to get Diamond Dave back on pipes! Basically, Eddie should have called it a day after it did not work out with Gary. If Eddie wants to continue he should do something that does not involve Van Halen. Led Zeppelin was done before Bonzo died. They should have disbanded before making In through the Out door. Not that it was a bad album. It was just the simple fact that Led Zeppelin had peaked and the ride ended, but nobody knew how to get off. I believe Zeppelin killed them selves subconsciously because they knew it was over. This could have prevented the death of Bonzo and other problems.
The Beatles are a good example of a band that knew when to call it quits. They did three of their best albums, peaked as a band and moved on. Let it be. (In their own words) It's sad to see when someone is trying to be what they once were. I partially agree with the guitar mag that said Eddie should retire. I think he should retire Van Halen. I realize that this has probably been said before on this site as well as others. I'm just sick of reading the same crap over and over again on the web. Let it go folks.
The problem with people is they want Van Halen to be the Van Halen they remember. That is old Van Halen or Van Hagar or Van Halen III. Well Van Halen can't be any of these. It's like trying to resurrect the dead. The music is timeless and will always be here for us to enjoy. So enjoy it. When I want to here Eddie and the boys tear it up like I remember I put one of the classic albums on. No matter what…. It is what it was."You've only got 12 notes and however you mix them up is your thing." - Eddie Van Halen

Is that too much to ask?RIP - Classic Van Halen

I disagree. They may share the VH name, but as a whole they are not what made VH the band. Half of VH is Edward and Big Al.
There's only four members of VH the band.
IMO of course.Last edited by smithjc; 09.13.06 at 03:31 PM.
