My Interview w/ Sammy (old)

Allow me to set the stage:

Sammy was on the Red Voodoo tour and was playing the "On The Waterfront" festival in Rockford, Illinois. At the time, I was a reporter for the NBC station. A co-worker of mine put in a request for an interview thru his management and surprisingly, it was honored (surprising 'cause the tix were sold out, CD was selling, no Cabo Wabo tequila). His manager later told me I was the only media he did that day... why?... no idea.

So about an hour before the show I got in backstage, wandered around saw Mona (who basically sat at a table with some family/friends waiting to go on)...saw Vic and David too, but didn't want to bother them... they all were eating. Finally, when the camera arrived, his manager said "Let's go", and we were led out back behind the stage to a trailer. Security opens the door and there at the back playing a guitar (clearly set-up for TV!) was Sammy.

Right off the bat, camera problem... the light died (you'll see). While the photog tried to fix it, Sammy and I just bullshitted about clothes and the song "Returning Home". He was really cool and didn't seem to care about the delay, even though he was going on soon.

The interview lasted 10 minutes (I didn't want to push it) and I only asked one VH question. I thought the break-up was still too fresh, ya know?

After the interview, he posed for a picture, patted me on the back, shook hands and asked if I was staying for the show. (I did)

I can't tell you how cool he was. Especially 'cause this was small market TV... he didn't have anything to gain. It really made my night that he was so friendly.

So without further adieu, here's about 4 minutes of the 10 minute interview (I havent fixed the 'brightness' yet)

Pay no attention to the dweeb in the blue shirt and glasses!

Pretty cool that he spoke about how he wanted to tour (i.e. cabo wab style) and this past year he got to do it. Awesome.

I just asked if it was in the setlist that night 'cause it's a favortie of mine and I loved hearing it on the MTM tour... he said it wasn't; there just wasn't any room for it, songs like that get squeezed out everytime he puts out a record, etc., etc.... but they did play "Hammer" that night!

Great job. I tried to get a interview down in New Jersey this past summer for my radio show and never heard back from his people. I was the only person in town playing his new stuff too. Oh well. One of these days I will get my chance.

Just out of curiosity....How do you get an interview with him? Do you know his cell phone number or something? Just seems kinda weird how anyone could get that information! Come to think of it, i'd like to get an interview with him....

It's all about people that KNOW Hagar's management. The dude I worked with knew someone that knew someone through a local radio station, who eventually put me in touch with his tour manager, who was then waiting for me to find him backstage. Lots of phone calls.
