Should I??
I have enough money to buy the Charvel EVH Art Series guitar but I cant decide.
$2400 is a lot for this guitar but I REALLY love it!
If I do get it, i'll get the black with yellow strips.
Its either this guitar or a Gibson ES-335.
hmmm...

I think I agree with filthy 150 on this. Thats the one thing that really bothers me about this guitar is the novelty aspect.
I too have a Wolfgang and think I may go with the 335 OR maybe a 135.
I was actually looking at 137's as well. Yep, the Charvel and Gibsons are 2 different animals for sure.
I would really love to have the Charvel but for that kind of dough I better get something that doesnt feel like a *novelty* so to speak.
Thanks for the advice Filthy 150!

hmm...I suppose the optimal question here is what is the impetus behind the purchase? Do you just have 2400 bucks burning a whole in your pocket? Are you trying to decide between buying the "neat" or "sentimental" guitar (the charvel) or the "sensible" guitar (the 335) Though I'm sure I'll come off just like one of the very many and very obnoxious know-it-all gearhead snob type of guys that seem to crawl out of the woodwork whenever one of these questions is raised, I'll give you my personal opinion on the 335.
If you're looking for a good semi-hollow to get "that" sound there are many many many other guitars you can get for the same or less (and in some cases substantially less) than a 335 by simply shopping around and putting aside the name recognition and "legend" of the Gibson 335. In my experience I've found the quality control on them to be sufficiently lacking and the guitar as a whole overpriced for the level and consistency of craftsmanship and materials involved. In my humble opinion, way too much of the price tag associated with the 335 is the long history, the lore and all the other "intangible" or "ego-associated" aspects of the 335 and the Gibson brand as a whole. SO, if what you're looking for is a solid, well-built bang-for-the-buck work horse of a guitar, consider going elsewhere.
HOWEVER, it's important to state for the record, that there isn't anything wrong with buying something because of the name, legend etc involved. My judgement is that we've ALL bought something just because we wanted to...because of the romance, the "cool" factor, whatever. It's a very important part of enjoying your purchase, and more important, enjoying the efforts and sacrifices that led you to the point where you had the money to spend on something that in the larger scope of life, isn't a "necessity." You know what I mean?
I have a few guitars that I bought because of the tone, the value, practicality, the over all design and usefullness...you know what I mean?, but I splurged like a motherfucker on a couple just so I could go to bed with the sheer sense of satisfaction in knowing I "had one!" You get what I'm saying? Don't discount a little self-indulgence and impracticality in life! It's just these sort of indulgences and little treats that make running this rat race worthwhile. I've not purchased a Gibson yet. I adore their acoustics but haven't had the funds to pick one up. I have what I consider to be the finest "les paul style" guitar in the world. I don't enjoy SG's and prefer other manufacturers when it comes to the 335. That said, sooner or later, I WILL buy myself a les paul, because damn it, it's a Les Paul and I want one and we should all probably have one...I mean come on...(and this is coming from someone with the fender logo tatooed on his arm)
I'm rambling I know, so I'll stop here in a second, but I think questions like this are fun. I'd love to know more about what you're looking for out of your purchase, what kind of guitars you already have, you know...the context within which you're making the decision. It's always fun buying a new guitar, especially when you've got some cash to play around with, as you apparently do. If you'd like, shoot me a direct message and we'll talk more...trade stories and opinions and stuff...

Fantastic post broken9500!
I hear what you are saying. I went yesterday to Guitar Center and they had a new Gibson ES-335 for $1900 ( red satin finish) and it SUCKED! The action was horrible and the craftsmanship was not what you'd expect for a 2K Gibson. I do realize the action could be fixed but it still left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak.
I am really all over the place on my decision here. I have decided NOT to go with the Charvel. I'd love to have it but not for that much money so now i'm leaning towards either a Gibson ES-137 (they had one and it was sweet) or a Gibson Les Paul standard or maybe even an American made Fender Strat.
Wow...I really am all over the place : )
You know, i've even thought about going with an Epiphone Casino ( its dirt cheap and the one I played felt fantastic!) and use the left over dough for another guitar : ) but i'm running out of room in my studio.
My girlfriend is gonna shit if I come home with 2 more guitars. I've bought 3 in the last 4 months. So far I have the Peavey American made Wolfgang (the cheaper US model not the arch top) a Seagull A6 electric acoustic ( love this guitar while recording but too bright *live*) and a Dean classical guitar (built in pickup and its GREAT!). I did a HUGE illustration/3D render job freelance outside of my normal agency work that paid me about 13K and i've already spent all of it on music gear. New quad Mac, Logic Pro, tons of soft synths, 88 key digital piano and 49 key controller, etc
I did dig into savings and pay off one of my girlfriends credit cards but now that good deed is fading fast so I may have to sneak in the new guitar(s) or pay off her over credit card. Definatly gonna send her flowers
LOL!
BTW, broken9500, you live pretty close to me! I'm a fellow Texan living in Ft Worth : )Last edited by batzilla; 08.30.06 at 07:47 AM.

Now its either a Fender Strat ( American made ), Gibson ES-335, Gibson ES-137, Gibson Les Paul Standard, or...

So what are we saying, here? That the party acted like complete imbeciles and took 15 votes because they didn't put their most popular candidate forward because McCarthy was begging for the job? ...
