    Default Oakland 81

I was watching the "Unchained" clip on YouTube from the Oakland 81 show and after the song ends, credits appear on the screen... something I had never seen before at the end of this video. It said "Van Halen is..." then listed the band members. Then it showed the production company:

So I am assuming the entire show has to be out there somewhere. I vaguely remember it being shown on MTV in '82. I know everyone has been looking for it, but I just thought it was interesting to see this at the end of "Unchained."

Whatever entity Lippsync is, the ceo(Peter Lippman) worked for that production company as a PA during the 1981 VH tour. A good person to ask maybe?

It must be time for our once every 3 months Oakland 81 talk, LOL!!!

Do a search for all the theories on what happened to this show. Several threads in the Bootlegs and VH past forums.

Oakland 6/11/81 & 6/13/81, some magic shows for sure.

ya when been here MANY times.

story I heard was this was a "class" prject type thing for a production company or some kind of collage intern thing.

Story I remember is that they only had enough tape to make the 3 now famous videos.

I have no idea if it is true or if I even remember it correctly (i am 42 for god sakes)

but the jest of the story is that there is no more footage. many do not believe that could be true, but you would think we would see something by now.

So many theories, so little time.

    And no facts.

T/G I went to this show before I was old enough to drink.

I swear this entire show was taped. I dont buy that they only taped enough for 3 songs. Unchained was played at the end of the show and HAIT and STIL were played earlier in the show. What did the camera guys do in between ?

It makes no sense to save those 3 songs and destroy some of the others.
At the time the band had no idea those songs were going to be popular with their crowd. Why would they only save those 3 and forget about You Really Got me Aint talkin bout love and Dance the night away and the guitar gods solo.
Those were the bigger hits for the band.
It just does not make sense. As popular as VH was during that time period there has to be more locked up in Eddies vault.

I mean come on , how can there only be 2 shows on video from the 1984 tour ? VH was so big back then. Shit there are more journey shows on video from that same time period. Kiss was big in the 70's and there was no technology at the time but there are crystal clear boots from their glory years.
I went off topic a bit but who is going to e-mail this guy ?

    the whole show exists.

you can't just tape and edit like this for 3 songs. it doesn't work like that.

they whole thing was recorded, someone has or has forgotten they have it.

watch, it will pop up at a flee market or yard sale after the death of some video tech tha tworked on this.

First off, here's something for the Oakland 81 topic:

Secondly, I don't think there should be any doubt that the whole show was recorded. I mean, are we supposed to believe someone got on their walkie-talkie after Hear About It Later and said, "ok, boys, shut all the cameras off...we'll pick it back up again for So This Is Love. After that, shut everything off again and we'll pick up again with Unchained. Eddie told us he only wants us to tape these three songs."

Van Halen has this whole show and they don't feel like sharing it. Simple as that.
    .
    .
    .
VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

    The answer is:

If, and I mean IF Van Halen reunites with Dave, maybe they will release this.
Maybe they will release it with the long awaited, much rumored boxed set if it ever comes to fruition.

I don't know if the whole show was filmed, BUT I do remember when MTV first aired (I,m 42) those 3 songs were to promote the Fair Warning album. VH and management just wanted live videos to show how "smokin" the band was and not some stupid "a-la" Pretty Woman vid.............

p.s. for shits&giggles, Kiss is releasing (Oct.31st) a box set vol.1 DVD collection from '73 to '77, FOUR FULL show's. Gene needs to call Ed and tell him how it's done!
