    2006 VHLINK'S Hurricane Thread...

Well, here we go again sportsfans. The true colors of the South Florida dweller have reared their ugly face yet again: Panic and Selfishness.

The usual "the sky is falling" local TV coverage, the same self-important weather-casters interrupting programming every five minutes with absolutely nothing newsworthy thing to state, so they inspire unneccesary fear instead. Needless to say, Home Depot, supermarkets and Walmart type stores are the place to see and be seen.

To my Florida brethren I wish you all peace and Godspeed. This coming fucker may yet be only a severe rain storm, yet let us not forget that was what the last one was.

I figured we could all check in here from time to time, if and when possible.

Oh by the way...my job interview is Wednesday, 9:20 am(EST). The same time this bastard is scheduled to arrive in S. Florida.

    Best of luck.

For the airport job? Good luck chef! Hopefully, it will hold off or better yet, die down. You'll have to tell us how it goes. Anything at the library?

No word yet on the airport job, the library interview is Wed. I spent the weekend cutting trees, tommorow will be spent moving outdoor furniture indoors.

We've stockpiled the usual water, sterno stuffs, ect. Yet Florida Power and Light sucks. We'll lose power if a bird flies over the transmitter, much like the cable service.

Yup, here we go again! As of right now we are expecting 70mph winds which will do nothing other than give us a paid day off of work.

Oh yeah, here we go. Gotta love the Hurricane Parties. Unfortuneatly, my job requires me to work in the storms, especially post landing. This means I'm usually away from my house and family. Today, I went over the generator procedures with the Mrs. Wish I could stay, but even if I was off duty, work would still call me in. Hopefully this will only be a wet one. So to all fellow linkers that live in the danger zone, be careful and don't do stupid shit. Stay in your neighborhood and help each other out. Stay off the road and let Fire, Police and Power Co do thier job. Oh, and hey Chef, keep Mom safe and tell her I'll be by for more cookies.

I hate the fearmongering that is dominating news today.
When Rita hit last year I remember a young talking head on the local news announcing that "Well, we are FINALLY getting to see some action from this storm."
Wow, I was sure glad to see some destruction start to happen. I mean they had NOTHING to scare anybody with.

    Seriously though, everybody take care.

To put shutters up, or not put shutters up.

    That is the question.

    Again.
I know...yet I can not say this enough: Last year was a heavy rainstorm, and look what happened. The people behind me have just started replacing their roof. They only have paper on, waiting for the inspector to o.k. the job thus far and allow them to shingle. Basically, in a word they are fucked. Try finding a tarp, other than stealing one off of some other guy's house in the middle of the night (yes, this has happened, we are talking South Florida here ).

SWEET It's that time of year again. The time of year where I want to say fuck Florida and move back up North...Yet I am still here. Good news is I still have 1/2 a bottle of Cabo Wabo Reposado, some good beer and plenty of MRE/Backpacker meals...

ChefCraig, dude welcome back (I haven't been on a lot recently), but I know you were in a bad way. Great to see you, hope all is better for ya!

Remember 2 years ago, VH in SoFLA was our saving grace after like our 5th hurricane.
Last year just sucked... I was 2 weeks w/o power. I wasted too many batteries powering my old Sholtz Rockman playin Guitar hahaha. I knew I shoulda bought an acoustic!!!

When it hit year and the storm was at its worst, I shut myself in the bathroom (the only place w/o windows), with water, snacks, my portable radio/tv, my iPod (loaded with plenty of VH), and my guitar. Those I guess ar ethe necesssities.

Be safe fellow SoFLA VHLinkers! And of course you guys on the Gulf/Space Coast and up North! See you on the flip side :-)

Ernesto on track for South Florida
    POSTED: 8:22 a.m. EDT, August 29, 2006

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Ernesto moved over water north of Cuba Tuesday and was expected to strengthen before striking Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

At 8 a.m. ET, Ernesto was about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southeast of Key West and about 215 miles (350 kilometers) south-southeast of Miami in the Florida Straits.

With its 45 mph winds, the storm gained 5 mph overnight and was expected to be near the Florida coastline late in the day as it tracked to the northwest at 14 mph.

Rainfall amounts of up to 10 inches were predicted for southern and eastern Florida by Wednesday.

Tropical storm-force winds extend up to 85 miles from the storm's center, the NHC said.

Ahead of Ernesto's arrival in south Florida, a tropical storm warning and hurricane watch were in effect from Bonita Beach on the west coast, wrapping around the bottom of the peninsula to New Smyrna Beach on the east. (Watch how Ernesto could pose a serious problem for Miami -- 1:55)

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguin, Las Tunas, and Camaguey, Cuba.

While Ernesto is a weak tropical storm, its rains could still cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.

"Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches with isolated amounts up to 10 inches are expected over eastern Cuba," the NHC said. "Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with isolated amounts up to 6 inches are expected over central Cuba."

The warning also remains in effect for Ragged Island and Great Exuma in the central Bahamas, with rainfall amounts of up to 6 inches expected.

Haiti could receive another 3 inches of rain overnight, adding to the island's drenching.

Florida has declared a state of emergency, and residents are stocking up on food, water and fuel. Drivers waited in long lines Monday to fill up gas tanks. (Full story)

Florida officials ordered tourists to evacuate the Florida Keys on Sunday afternoon, and the area should begin to feel Ernesto's winds early Tuesday.

Monroe County -- which encompasses the Keys -- declared a state of emergency, primarily in order to qualify for state and federal assistance if required.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has already begun to prepare for Ernesto's possible impact on Florida, FEMA Director David Paulison told CNN Monday.

Paulison canceled plans to join President Bush on a trip to New Orleans to participate in events commemorating Hurricane Katrina, in order to focus on monitoring Tropical Storm Ernesto.

FEMA spokesman Aaron Walker says Paulison "is of greatest value when he is directing the country through a disaster."

FEMA currently has four urban search-and-rescue teams in Florida, as well as 13 medical teams in and around the state on stand-by. The agency has moved supplies into Homestead, outside of Miami, and Jacksonville, in northeastern Florida.

Florida state authorities have not yet requested FEMA assistance but, Paulison said, "We're standing by to be partners with them if they do need that assistance."

The storm prompted NASA to scrub the space shuttle launch set for Tuesday. (Full story)
