    Default "Sinner's Swing" Live 1981

    Here's something different..........

I was screwing around a few days back learning some new video editing software and threw together a live video of Van Halen playing "Sinner's Swing" using the snippets of the '81 Chicago shows' footage and tacked on the audio of the 6/21/81 show I recorded back in the day. It's pretty messy but considering the filmed footage from the two Chicago shows last a grand total of about 12 minutes, divide that by about 16 songs per show time two and that means I had about 20 seconds of footage from that actual song to work with. So yeah, there's shit from all sorts of different songs during those shows but it captures the spirit of that tour.

Was it really amazing? I thought Roth sounded like crap...as he did his usual grunting through the song. They have good energy on stage (no duh), but amazing is not the word I choose. No offense, vhrocks2005...I respect your opinion...it just never ceases to amaze me how people look the other way with some of Dave's vocal performances...He sounds better from the boots I saw from this year!

O well, this arguement always goes nowhere..but I have to bring it up once in awhile, because I just don't get it. I mean play that video for any non-fan and I gurantee the reaction will be the same - "Gee, Dave sounds horrible."

Of course Roth was off a little back in his prime with his singing. I am surprised he was even able to stand on stage.
Those were the days of heavy drugs and alcohol.
He sounds better today because he has eased up on that kind of stuff. It was a big party back then.

Excellent job putting that together. It's never a bad thing to see old school footage that you've never seen before. I enjoyed that.

I've collected bootleg recordings since the mid seventies. As a result I've been burned a few times, at others I''ve been rewarded. The point is that it's pretty much a 50/50 venture, and I'm used to reduced sound quality or lousy performances. It's ok, I can deal with it overall.

I honestly believe that folk are simply spoiled nowadays. One can actually purchase the show one just paid to see on the way out in venues today. The instant gratification inherant is simply amazing.

"Authorised" live releases are a common thing, with high sonic quality a benchmark. This is achieved through rerecording parts of the performance (singing, bum notes) or inserting different camera angles so one doesn't notice a booger in the guitarist's nostril.

It's perfectly homogonized, and frequently boring as watching cars rust, which is why I welcome stuff like what Apocalypso put together. It also reminds me of the fucking firepower that this band once posessed. Listen to the almighty whack of the snare and bass drum!

I truly appreciate the effort that went into this, and I thank you earnestly for being kind enough to share it.

    Outstanding.

IMO, as a decent live singer Dave peaked around the 1980 - 81 tours. There are other songs on this particular recording of 6/21/81 where Dave sounds much stronger such as "Ice Cream Man" and "Mean Street." There's some shows from the '79 and '80 tours where Dave actually sounds pretty amazing when the band was just hitting their peak as a live world-class arena rock band. Still, for overall greatness, the 1981 tour was easily the best the entire band played or sounded even if dave was just starting to loose some range and power in his voice.

Once they got into the Diver Down tours, I think a creeping level of sloppiness and road wear started to show in a lot more shows not just in Dave's singing but even in the rest of the band's playing as well. The two shows I saw in '82 and the '83 US Festival were all sub-par performances despite the fact that tour featured the longest setlists of any tour they did. I will say the '84 show I saw the band seemed a *lot* tighter but the tightly choreographed "showbiz" aspect of that tour and the short setlist kept that tour from comparing favorably to pre '81 tours.

And let me also say, I appreciate the hard work that was put into making this and for sharing it. And I'm not trying to be an asshole at all.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around Dave's vocal performances and what made Van Halen so great back then. I saw Van Halen for the first time in 1984, and I wasn't impressed, even as a 13 year-old with Dave and the way he sang. Granted that was my first concert overall too, and I quickly learned that was the M.O. of lots of bands, but nobody can honestly tell me that Dave sounded good.

I own a few boots of Dave and when I play them...and there are non fans around like my wife or friends, they all say the same thing - "What is this? - It sounds like crap." Now I will grant you the quality of a boot is never going to be like a studio recording...but in contrast I have boots from Journey, Bon Jovi, Rush...none of them sound as bad as the Van Halen ones.

Look, I'm a huge, huge fan. I love all the music. I'm just trying to figure it out. I guess the vibe was more important than what was coming out of Dave's mouth?
