    Default Bottom Line!!

Bottom Line, If Van Halen Ever Does Tour Again Eddie needs To bring back the old original Frankenstrat. If you go to YouTube and watch the old concert videos compared to the Say (Gary Era)... Listen to the tone of the guitar... EVH needs to bring back those old marshalls im sure he probably doesnt even know how to get that original BROWN sound back Then again Eddie could Come out on stage with a TUBA and id be first in line to see it

His sound has evolved past that now. Yeah it is "the tone" that we all want, but he's into his sustainer and all that now so that tone is dead. Too bad!

I don't know. VH3 Tour tone really kicked some ass! Balance tone was EASILY my favorite. So, I don't think he'd have to go back to the Frankie. His tone just got better and better through time. Throw in the sustainer and that changes everything...
In and out. I didn't even make that pun on purpose.

EVH knows how to get that sound, he just doesn't seem to want it around anymore.

Dude, I thought his tone on the VH3 tour kicked all kinds of ass and was his best tone since Diver Down or something. He had that guitar really screamling. It was so raw and stripped down. Some say it was because he was using a cord again. Anyway, it was a refreshing sound after the previous "too polished" sounding Hagar era albums. His Balance tone was pretty good too though.

By the way, Eddie does indeed still have that old Marshal 100 watt head. He had it restored so he could use it on some of the Balance tunes.

I agree with all of you. I love the balance era tone. But I also liked that raw III tone he had too. It was badass. A total change from the previous. Of course it also had to do with the Wolfgang guitar instead of the EBMM.

No, it didn't get better. But that's opinion. Here's another: the Eventide Harmonizer KILLED Ed's tone.

If Eddie could find that tone he had on Drop Dead Legs I would be happy. That song and Hear About it Later.....

Maybe on the next tour we will see something new. IF there is one.

I believe Ed's tone has changed with his ears. All those years of loud amps and studio monitors has obviously taken it's toll. If you've notice, right around Balance his tone started getting more high-endy and less warm.

He's cranking the highs to make up for the fact that his ears are damaged in that register. The drummer in my old band has the same problem. He's always turning up the treble on his stereo to hear anything. There were times when we had to explain the hi-hat rhythm from a recording because he couldn't hear it.

This may have occurred earlier but Andy Johnns may have saved us on F.U.C.K.

Unfortunately, unless they develop a time machine we'll never see the VH we all really want to see.

IMO, I thought III's tone wasnt welcoming, compared to FUCK, or balance. it was like he set the setting for one song & never changed it.
Sam, Dave,Gary... who cares. its all about what makes you feel good.

Getting off topic, but I'm no fan of the production on Carnal Knowledge. Too many overdubbed layers and too many cymbals! On some songs, it sounds like static from a bad radio. Alex uses the cymbals way too much on a lot of stuff, actually.
