what the fuck is dave doing?

billy's goat ranch in north dakota? firehouse? survivor?

just don't bother at all. stop embarrassing yourself.

this really pisses me off. he's destroying the legacy of van halen by preforming at these venues, with these second-rate artists.

you would think that after all the success and everything in the 1980's he would be reluctant to sink down to this level.

this really is a sad day for me.

Youso- You need to SNAP back into reality man. What the fuck are you talking about. Do you think in what seems to be "your total delerium" that Roth can pack in the crowds at some big venue himself? Your Nuts!! This guy had to cancel his tour with Extreame in the early 90's because he couldn't sell shit. His solo stuff is somewhere between medeocore and just plane bad. Let it go man....LET IT GO!

Well, if you think Roth solo can outdo VH, then you're insane. Everyone knows that.

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

I don't understand what people want. You're happy Dave relied on VH material in 1999. You'll be happy if he does the same in 2001.

How many times can he do it before enough is enough, and he's just a pathetic dinosaur that needs to be put down?

Once Dave gets on this treadmill, how will he get off again? If he doesn't push his solo work now, when will he? Every tour gets him farther and farther from those solo tunes, and nothing will bring them back but his commitment to them.

Are we just hoping that Dave puts together a new solo album, then goes out and plays 1 new tune and the rest VH again? If that's the future, he should retire.

Y'all seem to be missing the point here, I think. Dave's not out there trying to boost his solo career, or climb any mountain by himself.

For cripes sake, he's still trying to get back in Van Halen. Isn't that obvious to anyone else?

MikeL, he did the same thing in 1999. If that was his motivation then (to get back in VH), perhaps it worked because he earned himself a shot at writing with Edward again.

He obviously showed EVH what he had last year, and it obviously wasn't up to Edward's standards, so if he's back to trying to audition for VH again now, that pretty much shows it's a futile attempt.

He proved he could still sing VH tunes in 1999 and it didn't get him back in the band in 2000, so what's going to change if he proves he can sing VH tunes in 2001? What's going to be different for EVH in 2002 that wasn't there in 2000?

But does VH really want HIM back in Van Halen? Hell, for that matter, I'm trying to get into VH but it ain't gonna happen!

Truth is, and this hurts to admit this, it's over. Even IF they got back together, it ain't gonna be this summer or fall. Timeline...at LEAST next year before any futher plans evolve. Ed's health has to improve, songs have to be written / produced, contracts have to be signed, axes have to be buried...you see what I mean? The time to strike has come and gone. The hype is finished. The wagon has lost it's back 2 wheels.

Fair Warning (Camelot) is over. The memories will always be there, but the curtain isn't going to rise on "the show" again.

Hell if I know. I've got no inside info into what's going on. Dave obviously isn't doing this to prove to Ed he can still sing VH tunes. There would be a lot lower profile ways to do that than this.

Dave's mostly doing this to show Ed how the crowds react to him doing the old material. Why else would he play festivals with large numbers of concert-goers without anything to support?

The 3 tour didn't exactly highlight the power of the old tunes to draw fans. They had trouble selling shows. Ed is probably confused enough to think this is because of the material, not because of who was singing it. Ed had played mostly Hagar-material on the other recent tours, and they always sold. What conclusions do you think he was able to draw?

Can anyone think of a better reason why Dave is doing these shows? It certainly isn't to re-establish himself as a solo artist. He's got nothing new that he needs to push.

If this remains a short tour, I'm absolutely convinced that I'm right. If it stretches out for more than a month, than I'm obviously wrong. At this point though, nothing else makes sense.

Dave isn't doing this for the fans. He's acting in his own interest, and it just happens to coincide with some of our own.

Who knows...maybe Dave needs to get paid. It isn't like he's been steadily working the past few years or he's making a ton of money off past royalties....

You may be right, but I think the final nail is just hovering over the coffin, and the reaper is reaching for his hammer.

If Dave is trying to prove to Eddie that fans want to see VH tunes done with Dave singing them, doing them at an oldies festival may get the reaper swinging that hammer even quicker. You've got to think that Eddie would rather kill the band than turn it into an oldies act, playing to fans who want to hear Jump, and want to run and take a piss at the sign of any new song. I don't think Eddie is going to be swayed by the reaction of audiences that are just trying to relive 1984.

Either way, Dave looks like he's chasing something that's not available anymore.

For some reason I just see Ed telling Dave that the old tunes won't go over well, because they didn't in '98. What better way could Ed think of to reasonably decline a reunion, from his perspective? Ed doesn't like a bad fan reaction, and I'm sure in his mind anything other reason would bring that about.

What better way for Dave to prove him wrong?

I know, it's not the most rational thing. But Ed's no genious, and isn't the most rational guy around either.

It seems like Ed wasn't happy with those 3 songs that they wrote together, and that could/should be the end of the story if Eddie's offering up reasons for not wanting to work with Dave.

Now, whether Eddie has an open mind to those songs or whether he's too against Roth to see their potential, I don't know.

Just seems to me that all Eddie has to say is, "we're a current band and we can't write with Dave anymore. I'm not prepared to go out and live off the oldies at the expense of creating new material I'm comfortable with". No more would need to be said.

Problem is, if that were true, the time to say that was last year! Saying it now would make it seem that we've been strung along.

The two individuals at the heart of this thing have to be pretty fucked up in one way or another. Any reasonable people would have settled things one way or another quite a while ago.
