Job Possibilities...
I have just graduated from college. I got a Bachelors degree in Sociology, but I am having a hard time finding a job in that field. I am thinking about continuing on to get a Masters, but at this point I just want to find a job. Thing is, I really don’t know what I want to do. The sociology thing was my initial thought when going in to college, but now I am not so convinced. I am 23 and I'd like some sage advice if there is any to be had by the VH community.
Honestly, I like so many things it is hard for me to commit myself totally to one field. I am floating aimlessly in serious need of some direction.
Any thoughts?

Sociology, as with any social science, is largely worthless outside of teaching. I know: I went for history. I am now a collections representative for a major bank.
Unless you are planning on teaching, I would either look for a job in another field, or go back to school in another field. Also, just having your 4 year degree will open doors for you.
Good luck!

You don't need to stick with it but it's better than doing a job you don't really want and getting nothing extra out of it. Every extra letter after your name is worth a lot. Good luck.

Jeez - you can pretty much do anything you want - most if not all entry level positions just require a degree, any degree. Peruse the want ads, or Monster, or wherever, and look for something that jumps out at you as being interesting.
One caution - I would focus on INTEREST, not something like money. If you chase the money, you might end up in a hole that's tough to get out of. There are jobs in sales where you can make a decent amount of money quickly, and the danger there is that you can end up in a job you hate, but you can't afford to leave it, and you aren't qualified to make that money in another field. I know plenty of people that ended up in jobs where they were miserable, but couldn't take the pay cut of a career change. So be careful - despite what you may think, you are most likely at one of the few places in your life where you can actually afford to do what you want to do.

my two cents just from personal experience.
dont hesitate to take a good job even if unrelated to your degree.
sometimes it is important, but most times, employers just want to know you are dedicated enough to get ANY degree. dont feel like you wasted your education, you will learn over time that what you get out of college is much more than just a specfic knowledge, you learn how to learn, if that makes any sense.I SURVIVED TEXAS LINKERS WEEKEND I, II, III, IV and VI and VII.barely made it to VIII time to slow down

Thanks for the advice. I don’t think the degree was worthless as someone said, but it doesn’t leave many opportunities in that particular field. I learned a lot in college, so it was worth the education even if the discipline the degree was in doesn’t ever rear its head in my career.
Not long after I posted, I got a call to come in for an interview on Friday for a job I applied for the other day. It’s with something called a TRIO program at a community college. The position is for an education counselor. I would get to help low-income and disabled individuals get into college, arrange financial aid etc. The pay isn’t bad, and I like the idea of getting to help those less fortunate earn a college education.
I interview well, so hopefully I will get the job. Thanks again for the advice.Last edited by SkepticX; 08.15.06 at 04:11 PM.

FBI
ATF
Homeland Security
CIA
Boarder Patrol
INS
Secret Service
Department of the Interior
In short, the US Government is always looking for people, it's a great place to start, you get full bennies and you won't work too hard. From there you can leap-frog into the private sector working for the companies you dealt with while you worked for the Feds. Or maybe you'll actually like the job, in which case the government will pay you while you go back and get your Masters. My Bro is getting his PHD courtesy Uncle Sam.
There are also state agencies looking for suckers...uhhh, I mean entry level folks. Court House, Department of Corrections, department of recreation, education, fish & game etc. These are basic jobs that will end up being answering phones and opening and sorting mail but the money's good and yo can plan your next move."Nothing is ever what it seems but everything is exactly what it is." - B. Good thread. I'm looking too, although I'm currently employed.
Gonna bump this thread and hit it again tomorrow when I've got more time to ask questions.
