Mad ramblings from an Idiot!!
If you were EVH, and you had sold millions of albums, not, Kid Rock millions, not the bubble gum pop princesses of todays standards millions, not Green Day millions, not Pearl Jam millions, but Van freakin' Halen millions. I mean millions upon millions of albums...then why would you worry about, well....anything?? Patience please.
What I'm getting at is, if you were in that position, and you had hired Gary Cherone as your lead singer, and you loved the guy...he was your soul mate as Ed has claimed...and you made an album you were proud as hell of, and it was not comercially popular...why would you let that person leave your life, and your band?? I mean this is EVH, it isn't just Joe Schmoe from Buffalo folks....this is a guy who knows he is heralded as one of the finest guitarist of the entire rock era!! So why would you give into popular opinion?? Is that why Ed started this whole thing out to begin with...to be popular?? I doubt when he was a teen copying Clapton riffs that this was his main objective...I bet it was to make the best music he felt he could no matter what, and not worry about what others thought. It just blows my mind that someone who is so incredibly successful would give in to popular opinion. If you were in that situation, wouldn't you, being a millionaire, and a legend, just give your finger to the press and even your hardcore fans if they couldn't accept what you were doing...and make at least a second album with the guy?? I know I would....at that point in my life!! At that point...knowing I was a legend (c'mon he knows it) I would have said damn it all, I am going to do what I want, not what makes others happy, and if it ony sells 20 copies then to hell with it. So why the F walk away from that?? And why wouldn't you now, call the guy up and say...Gary, I don't give a damn what others think...wanna' make some music together?? Let us rock!!Last edited by againstthewind; 08.12.06 at 05:36 PM.

I don't think that it was popular opinion that did in the Cherone era VH. In fact, I believe it was their management at the time that convinced them to use Cherone who he (coincidentally or not) also managed. Ed wanted to use the relative unknown Mitch Malloy as the new singer and had actually told Malloy that he had the job only to have to turn around and tell him that in fact they were going to hire Cherone! I think all the positive talk Ed was doing in regards to Cherone had more to do with PR and maybe Ed trying to convince himself that it was the right move. When the public and Warner Bros. basically turned their nose up at that version of VH and what turned out to be a bloated, shitty album the writing was on the wall and it didn't take long for the axe to fall on Gary.

I suspect that his difficulties (cancer, addictions, family troubles) probably put a big dent in his motivations.
He *could* do what he wants to though, as you say. Thats why we are getting the professional porn scores now.

Do what you want Edward!
Eddie needs to do what he needs to do.
And whatever that is. Just do it! The time is now!

Two problems with your theory.
1. Ed might of wanted to get into the music business for the fame and money. (along with the music)
2. If Gary was such a musical sole mate, then why dont they still hang out.
For me, putting gary in the picuture was for he money and success aspect. It failed and.... so it is.Fair Warning... It's 5150 Time!!

All VH albums used to sell in excess of 2 million copies. Come VHIII, painfully reaching 500,000. Still a huge number, but for VH, small.
It's a big drop. And EVH being an insecure guy, I think that it made him doubt himself. Of course from an outsider's view, you're like "oh but he has 100 million $ in the bank why should he care?" He's the king of six string and 10 fingers, you may say. Well when he wakes up in the morning he's alone with his doubts.
I think it goes way beyond that. VHIII's "failure" shook the core of Ed's self-confidence.
He once let it slip in an interview that he noticed when he stopped being number one in guitar magazines reader's pole. It meant something to him. That kind of recognition is addictive. It's like if your neighbors suddenly stopped saying "hello" in the morning, it'd be weird.Little Dreamer

You wouldn't be sending in troops, geez. It's a civil matter. Is it an issue? Yes. Is America planning on doing anything to help? No, and you shouldn't. So it's just grandstanding by a president...
