Dont know if many of you are members of the EVH.com forums but a member over there has started up a site completley dedicated to building EVH Replicas. They arent too bad looking either. His personal replicas are completley full of detail and you'd think that it was actually eddies guitar.

So what's the deal with this guy? The site and his stuff looks top notch! Anyone know if this is some fly by night operation or if he's legit? Wondering how he's getting around the legal aspect...

He's legit.

Getting around the legal aspect is actually pretty easy.
The only concern with infringing on any "trademark" is the EVH paintjob.
As long as he continues to sell unpainted "kits", I don't see any reason for Ed's lawyers to go after him.

Ed supposedly owns the rights to EVERY ASPECT of the Wolfgang. I would guess the fact that frankenstraat.com says that the Wolfgang parts are so close to the originals that factory original parts can be used with them might be a problem. The scoop in the headstock of the Wolfgang neck as an example...

be careful!!a good friend of mine got a raw deal from this guy.he got a guitar that wouldnt stay in tune.he lives in the same town as james and had to hunt him down and threten him if he didnt give him a refund!!!

Anyone have a good experience with this guy? He's going to be offering a EBMM clone as well, and that neck is the neck I want. Anyone vouch for his quality?

I also had a bad experience with this guy. First off, he wanted my $$$ right away and then it took him 16 weeks and 3 days to deliver. Every week he would reply claiming it was almost done.

I bought a 5150 replica and within a week the fretboard separated from the neck. Additionally, the route for the Floyd was way off. So far off, in fact, that the trem block of the floyd wouldn't fit because the route was off center of the post holes. I still have it, though, it is more of a piece of wall candy. The damn thing is completely unplayable. I'd steer clear!

From what I've gotten out of dealing with him, he claims to be an artist, not a luthier.

Now, before you James Duffy lovers from EVH.com start to flame me, this is my honest and full take on my dealings with 'Frankenstraat'. For the rest of you, pay attention because pretty soon this place will be swarmed by a bunch of disciples of his from EVH.com claiming me, or anyone else who is critical of his work, are full of BS. The hard fact is that I got a crap guitar from this guy for way over what I should have paid. Stay far away!

I think Frankenstraat has the right to this site as long as he sells kits and offers no striping whatsoever. However, those in the know understand that he makes replicas (and good ones) and if caught, Ed's lawyers will be all over this the second Ed finds out about it. Ed's No.1 gripe is with people who produce/profit from his striped guitars.

He may have the right to produce the kits and raw materials to some guitar shapes, but the actual striped guitar replicas are, as JP puts it, "Breakin the Law!"

The fact that Ed's guitars are all over the homepage may be reason enough for our hero to take action.

I'll give this site about 3 weeks before being shut down.

The replicas shown on the homepage simply show what can be done with his kits if you so desire.
Nothing illegal about that to the best of my knowledge.

Nah, I don't hold a grudge. I just don't want to see someonelse put all kinds of money in an unplayable guitar. By the way, he has been selling these without a site for some time over at www.eddievanhalen.com under the user name Frankenstraat. He has a really good CD which shows how to stripe them and has lots of details. I just got a crap guitar after a long time.

Anytime I brought it up, though, I was bashed for it. I am only stating the honest truth, this guitar is a POS. As wall art, it is great. But just don't expect it to be playable.
