    Interesting article.

To me if leaving a hit song out of a set could be god or bad. For the most part, and most likely it's a 50/50 thing. If you play it every tour, it could get mundane. However if left out of a tour or even sets, people get pissed cause they didn't play it.

    Know what I mean?
One noticeable difference between Judas Priest and Metallica...

It'd be interesting to see what would happen if a big enough band could schedule two shows in one city, tickets go on sale at the same time, and it's announced that the first night will be the hits, the second night will have a few hits, but will be mostly album tracks. Which would sell out first?

Also it would be cool if a band could include ballots with their tickets that list all their songs and the ticket buyers pick maybe 15 songs and turn the ballots in and then the band plays the top 20-25 songs picked for each venue.

when neil young released his eclectic 'trans' album in the mid 70's he came out one night while on tour and played the entire album from start to finish...not only that but he played extended versions of all the songs. allegedly, fans got a little impatient while neil experimented on stage and played an entire new album that, quite frankly, no one cared for. so after the set he goes back stage to take a breather for the encore. by this time the fans are out-right booing. his management tells him to play the hits. it's what the fans want to here. he goes back onstage and plays the entire album again. priceless.

Most bands I have seen live, play all their hits, and 2 or 3 songs from their latest album.

Although I do remember seeing Alannah Myles live years ago, and she ignored all her first album except for two songs. Her first album was her best and most successful album. She played a lot of new slow songs instead, the fans didn't like it. She is the only band I went to see, that didn't get an encore, no one clapped or cheered when her setlist was done. Everyone got sick of ballads they never heard before.

I like most bands like Dream Theater and Queensryche. DT generally changes its setlist every night, and tries to not play any of the same songs from the last time they played in a specific city.

And Ryche, they constantly change the setlist from tour to tour. I've seen almost every song they've ever done through the years. Seen 'em where they've not played a single Mindcrime song among other things, and then turnaround and do the whole Mindcrime album. And the Priest tour where they focused on the pre-Mindcrime era. Or a focus on Q2K. They've had many different setlist themes, even over the past six years.

One thing great about Van Halen is that up through Balance they'd play just about every song when touring for a new album. Not many bands can claim this.

How did they make that work - paper ballots? online voting? was the song list good for one city or one leg of the tour? were all of their songs eligible or just a select list?
