    Van Halen-izing your whammy bar

How do you set up the tremolo arm on a Wolfgang to swing freely like Eddie's does? In my Wolfgang manuel it says something about the tremolo spring pocket, but I'm not sure what that is.

My Wolfgang has the screw in type whammy bar...all I do is screw it in all the way and then back it off one turn and voila... it swings freely.

It's Peavey's own licensed version of the Floyd.

As far as the original question goes, note the parts I've highlighted in the diagram below. Adjusting it like Ed's is a matter of tightening the part of the trem 'barrel' on the top and the part on the bottom to where the whole thing 'floats' and doesn't bind on the main plate of the tailpiece itself, but the arm, when screwed into the 'barrel' tightly, won't fall or rotate out. When you spin the arm, the 'barrel' moves with it. The top and bottom parts of the 'barrel' (the part the arm actually screws into) are independently adjustable from each other. Make sense? You may have to take the Floyd all the way out of your guitar to make the proper adjustments, but when you do, I think you'll understand what I'm getting at.

Let me know if there's any other questions about it...

Are you comfortable with taking the Floyd out of the guitar? That's really the only tricky part of it. If you can do that and take a close look at the parts I'm talking about, it should pretty much explain itself. Trust me, it's really not all that difficult...

No, I'm not comfortable with taking the Floyd out of my Wolfgang. In the Wolfgang manuel it says, "If you prefer to have the tremolo arm swing freely, loosen the nut on the bottom of the tremolo arm socket. This is accessible through the tremolo spring pocket." Can somebody translate that for me? Sorry if I sound stupid, but I'm not a part guru. I just wanna jam!

Coming from underneath (the back of the guitar), it would appear you can adjust the arm's tension by going in between the springs. Can you remove one of the springs to get a clearer look? Accoring to six's diagram, this looks to be the case.

OK, I found this over at vintagekramer.com. Pay close attention to the pic at the very bottom (that's exactly where you make the adjustment):
