How does anyone with any conscience close a thread that has 27,000+ views and on its way to 1,000 replies?
Obviously there is a passionate discussion going on.
That kind of censorship blows me away every time.

Hey I was just posting and by the time I finished with my "masterpiece" the thread was closed.

Then I see that Seen gotta post his stuff. WTF?
(I know, I'm not a mod and those are probably mod privileges)

Not that I had anything interesting to say, mind you.

LOL! The thread had devolved into the typical "I'm right/You're wrong" territory coupled with James_in_NY posting like a Pollyannaish fanboy through rose-colored glasses, ad nauseam. His urging people to use the ignore button on those who don't irrationally worship Ed?

    pert, that is censorship.

Furthermore, you disproved your own point. The thread had reached 47 pages, 647 posts, and 28,000+ views. What kind of censorship is that?

I formally call upon MikeL to turn in his nazi mod card!

pert, I've stripped your whining out of the unrelated thread you dumped it into, and placed it in the proper spot. Feel free to bitch all you like, so long as you do it in the right spot. I won't have you dragging down an otherwise decent thread just because you feel as though you need some attention.

Pert's got a point. I didn't realize the thread was shut. What a shame. MikeL, if the problem was Pert, why not just shut him down, and leave the thread open? I freakin HATE censorship!! Totalitarian governments have been practicing censorship for centuries each time their toes get stepped on.

Too bad God has an open mind. If he were the mod who shut that thread, none of use would have been born, and none of this controversy would have had to have been endured.

Great people make great mistakes. How sad, how very sad for the very heart and mind of humanity, justice and free speech.

Threads should be allowed to die on their own. No one killed dinosaurs, they just eventually went oof:

sad, so sad. Its a sad day for freedom lovers & free speech lovers everywhere. A very sad day indeed.

    You tell 'em Ph@!!

I sometimes wonder about the decision to close threads. Sometimes it seems like the mod's personal pref to close it b/c they don't like what is being said, or it's something they don't agree with.

    Sometimes. Not all the time.

MikeL said it himself a while back, and it's still as remarkably astute (and funny) as it was then: "One of the perks of being a mod is that I can close threads. What I'd really like is the power to prevent them from beginning." (I'd wished to add this statement to my sig, yet sadly, Sucka had beaten me to the punch. )

People that whimper about thread closures refuse to see the bigger picture. Allowing mindless flogging of the same point over and over is not only redundant, it's insulting to one's intelligence. When it degenerates to outright bashing and name-calling, why allow it to continue?

There are those among us that appear to have an agenda, one that allows them to draw attention to themselves while at the same time pretending to be championing a freedom of speech, or responding to an imagined infringement of this "freedom". (Do a thread search, you'll find a virtual roster of the same folk repeatedly engaging in this practice.)

And what's the big deal about thread closures, in any event? Chances are the same arguement will reappear within the context of another thread within hours or minutes.

Exactly what thread are you guys referring to?

I have closed several in the past week simply because they were repetitive. Threads on the new topics already existed. Besides, those multiple threads on the same topics tend to drop off the radar quickly anyhow and the original poster doesn't get heard...
