Default The Dark Knight (Batman Begins 2) thread

Found the title of the new movie, so I figured I would start the official movie thread.

Batman Sequel Title & Casting Confirmed!
Source: Warner Bros. Pictures August 1, 2006

As a follow up to last year's blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama Memento, which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Bale.

Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick's The New World. His other credits include Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho, Laurel Canyon and Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, which was his first starring role.

Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Casanova, Monster's Ball, Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Patriot.

"Chris' unique vision is what made 'Batman Begins' such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of 'The Dark Knight,'" said Robinov. "We also can't wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker."

"I'm excited to continue the story we started with 'Batman Begins,'" added Nolan. "Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."

Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.

To this day I regret that nobody saw the wisdom in making an animated version of Frank Miller's "The Dark Night Returns".

Talk about inspired! A 50 year old, retired Batman. Robin a 13 year old girl. Superman as a puppet for the Reagan government, a dupe of totalitarian control, who fights Batman to the death at the end ( )? The original "tank" Bat-mobile!

I found this 4 part graphic novel (yup, I bought each one via the original "installment plan", one every few months as they were published way back when, drooling in anticipation for each segment to arrive)) to be fascinating.

I thought "Year One" was ok, yet it became pretty much "Batman Begins". (How about a version of "Arkum Asylum", while we're at it? )

(Decorum only allows me to briefly mention the sequel to "Dark Knight", yet only in passing. What a turd. )

Gawd, DK 2 was abysmal. What a dissapointment.

However, DK 1, Kingdom Come, Watchmen, and the Sandman series will go down as the greatest graphic novels of all time.

I dunno about Ledger as the Joker. I can think of several other age-apropos actors to square off with Bale.

Still, good title though. About time DK was used as a marquee. Duh.

It seems a Watchmen movie has been green-lit by Warner. I've never read it but Empire magazine is very excited about it, so I assume it's good. It'll be directed by the same guy who's currently working on Frank Miller's 300.

Watchmen is going to suck royal. It's the mother of all comic books as their known today. It's THE book. The comic bible. None better.

It's waaaay too rich and complex to boil down to a 3 hour flick. The ONLY way to do Watchmen justice is if it were a shot-by shot, word for word adaptation like Sin City.

Let's hope the title conveys the feeling/mood of the film. When I saw the previews for Begins, I knew it was going to be better than average when the line in the preview had "Evil fears the Knight." This is how Batman should be-dark and brooding. I can only hope Katie Holmes won't be in this movie, however I'm sure they'll have her back and I'll have to hear her endless babbling of love for Tom/Suri/scientology.

Don't know about Ledger either, but I hope Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are back as Alfred and Fox. They were great in my opinion. I agree with csm5150 in hoping that Katie Holmes won't be back, but seeing how "cold" the set must have been a few times in Double B was okay...
