    Sammy and boxing

So, to what extent was Sammy Hagar involved in boxing? I would imagine that it's been hyped up over the years and is more myth than reality. Anybody have any info about this? How many fights? Wins? Losses? Anecdotes? Just curious.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Sam's father a boxer? And from that, it inspired Hagar to take on boxing as his profession, until he got involved with music...
In and out. I didn't even make that pun on purpose.

Yeah, that's true. His father was a boxer. I'm just wondering if Sammy actually "gave up a boxing career" as a lot of articles say, or whether the years have kind of generated a myth.

I believe I read that he was an actual boxer who fought in matches and such but I have no clue what his record was. I don't think he was going to have a million dollar future with it though, good thing he went with the guitar.

A couple of google searches didn't show much..

    From Xtrememusician.com

Sammy Hagar was the son of semi-famous boxer Bobby Burns, or Robert Hagar. Robert wanted his son to grow up in his shoes, and be a professional boxer. For a while, Sammy tried to oblige his father.

boxing google searches for Bobby Burns and Robert Hagar didn't turn up much.

One fight documented for Bobby Burns on 5/3/24 vs Panama Al Brown

Other boxing matches for "hagar" date back to the late 1900's.

I did discover, however, that the guy who created Hagar the Horrible is left handed.. so I got that going for me, I guess..

Sammy doesn't talk a lot about details of his fights. I remember him saying that his mother was opposed to him boxing like his father did, and he gave it up for a singing career.

I know Sammy is a huge boxing fan, he also has a heavy bag at his house, and saw him punch it before. Sammy is good friends with Oscar De La Hoya, Oscar goes to Cabo sometimes, he had Oscar sing there before too.

I thought Sam was into Kickboxing, not boxing? I remember during an interview at the beginning of the Sam/DLR tour a DJ asked him who would win between his kickboxing and DLR's Karate.

    Anyone else remember that?

I also seem to remember that Sammy and Eddie were friends with Ray Mancini (Boom Boom) who allegedly came up with the name for the F.U.C.K. album.

Sammy must have had a weird relationship with his dad. Aside from the boxing thing, I was always under the impression that his dad was pretty much a raging alcoholic and it really effected Sammy when he was kid. I think I remember interviews from long ago where he said he didn't touch alcohol until much later in life because of his father.
