Recording (bass guitar) onto the computer.... Little help?

Anyone know of any good, fairly inexpensive software that will help make a better sound recording from {bass} amp to .WAV file? Im currently using Sound Recorder and a $10 Radio Shack microphone, needless to say, much is left to be desired in the quality department.

what are you trying to do? are you just wanting to get an idea down?

I think theres a free trial of adobe audition available.

also,if you know about newsgroups go to alt.binaries.sounds.utilities and look through there for sound forge,or the aforementioned adobe prog,there are usually one or 2 of those apps there for you to check out in a try before you buy kinda concept

also,...if there is anyway to ajust the buffer size in sound recorder,...make them bigger until there is no more popping etc.

also try going direct instead of using a mic,.....use the direct out on your amp (if you have one) or go out and buy a $20 behringer direct box

hope that helps and makes sense,....I havent had caffine yet today.

What im trying to accomplish is to hear myself play over the song - so i can listen for mistakes, timing, etc.
Im going to go look for the adobe prog.

Also, remember the whole mantra of "garbage in, garbage out". The $10 Radio Shack microphone probably isn't helping you for a number of reasons.

Behringer sells these little 2-4 channel mixers for cheap ... you could grab one of those and use it as a bass preamp to feed your computer input as a active DI box/preamp. That would help you out a lot and then you could go direct in from that mixer OR choose to use a microphone off that little mixer.

You could also try just putting the bass directly on your soundcard microphone input jack (just make sure to adjust the levels to where you're not clipping the input). You might be limited on frequency response there, but you'd never know until you try.

Try DI with your bass and EQ it once you record the wav.
