Sammy era MIX CD
Ok so the problem is that I think there's too much filler on Sammy CDs. For every RIGHT NOW you've got SPANKED. I think they're all just too long...cut out a few songs here and there on each Van Hagar CD and you've got a top notch album.
I often find myself just not listening to the Van Hagar CDs too often for 2 reasons
1) Too much filler
2) The crappy sonic quality of 5150 & OU812.
My solution was to make a Sammy era mix CD. Just got done with it, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. I wanted to get all the eras on to one 80 min CD. I picked songs that represented what I think Van Hagar was, not necessarily the greatest hits.
So here's what I got:
1) POUNDCAKE
2) HUMANS BEING
3) MINE ALL MINE
4) JUDGEMENT DAY
5) WHY CAN’T THIS BE LOVE
6) DON’T TELL ME (WHAT LOVE CAN DO)
7) BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
8) RIGHT NOW
9) CABO WABO
10) AFTERSHOCK
11) DREAMS
12) FINISH WHAT YA STARTED
13) CROSSING OVER
14) “5150”
15) TOP OF THE WORLD
I really wanted to add FEELS SO GOOD, IT'S ABOUT TIME, CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU & WHEN IT'S LOVE, but there wasn't enough time. Add those 4 to the songs listed above and I think you've got the perfect Sam CD.
So what does everyone think of my mix? And don't get all Dave vs. Sam on me, cause this isn't about that. Most VH fans would agree that there is some filler on the Sam albums, and that's just how it is.
So now you know. And knowing is half the battle.

Nice mix, although a couple of songs that I personally feel were extremely underrated from that era were Feelin' and Take Me Back, from Balance. I think these really showcase the band's versatility, and emotion. But that's my personal opinion.
As for your complaint about filler, I believe that's every CD, from every artist. Very rarely does a CD get released on which every song is a top notch song. Hell Dave tried "trimming the fat" from one of his CD's for release and ended up with only four songs. Bands know that not every song is a hit, as do record companies. Now granted, I often disagree with what songs get radio airplay and which ones don't. Personally, I wish the radio stations would bury Why Can't This Be Love for about a decade, and play 5150, Good Enough, Black 'n' Blue, Sucker In A Three Piece, This Dream Is Over, Aftershock, Feelin' and Take Me Back. But again, that's just my humble opinion.Come on baby(Van Halen), Finish What Ya Started. I'm incomplete!!!!!

Ok fine
Ok, yeah there is some filler on the Dave albums, and I did the same thing with those...made a BEST OF Dave era. But the filler is a lot less with Dave cause the albums were only about 35 mins long. I think once CDs got popular, at the end of the '80s, a lot of artists took advantage of the technology...and the fact that an album could now be about 75 mins...and they made albums that were way too long.
Take Carnal Knowledge for example. Came out in 1991, when CDs were just gettting big....if you remove SPANKED, IN N' OUT, MAN ON A MISSION, the album would be much better. Maybe RUNAROUND, too.

Most probably, yeah. That song is sort of a cornerstone of who VH was during the Hagar years.

Bad to the Bone......hear hear on that about spanked. People jumped the "spanked is the worst song ever" band wagon after Ed made fun of Sam's lyrics. The song has a good groove and is catchy and so what about the lyrics. No one had a problem in 1991. In todays ever so jaded society it seems "gay" and some fans avoid the song like it's the plague...or think it's Sam's.."lyrical lowpoint..."..gimme a break....
continue......
