I remember the same feeling when I heard Def Leppard "Pyromania"...It was like what happened to the "High and Dry" Def Leppard???

Um, yes, Jump sucked from the get-go. Still does. Always will.
However, cannot agree re: Pyromania. Although you are correct in the sense that High and Dry Def changed tone and style.

Wasn't around when it debuted, but hated it when I first heard it. I don't hate it now, but I really don't like it, and it doesn't rank in my Top 80 Van Halen songs, that's for sure.
Pyromania rocks, though. Loved it since the day I bought it.In and out. I didn't even make that pun on purpose.

To be honest, I was blown away by Jump. I made a tape with it that just had Jump over and over and over again. I loved it. I still like it. My kids love it.
Van Halen = Jump
(whether you like it or not!)
Van Halen is heavy, B-side, guitar driven, drum thumpin' magic, but like it or not, it's also pop rock...and they are more "popular" because of Jump, Dreams, Right Now, I'll Wait, Dancin' in the Streets, Pretty Woman, Love Walks In, When It's Love, Dance the Night Away, Not Enough, Etc.
These songs made the other songs possible you freaks. (I'm one of you!)The Barn Burned Down, Now I can See the Moon

Jump was quite an adjustment whenst it first appeared altho I did like the video since it showed the boys in action.
I'm still not used to the song tho. To me it was the beginning of the end of VH as we (or at least I) knew them.RIP - Classic Van Halen

I'll agree, the video is too damn good! I just don't care for the song itself...

I was 13 and loved it.
I grew to hate it over the years, but in 1984...nope.
You know how many people in their early 30's now were turned onto Van Halen by "Jump" and its video on MTV? A shitload, it's a hugely important song in VH's history, if not THE most important. Millions of people became VH fans after the song and video came out.Webmaster

It's just Sammy improvising. It's not from an existing song/cover piece. Might actually have been a lyric chunk Sam had ready to go. Sounds like he was not expecting the riff that Ed launched into...
