With the recent revelations about Ed's divorce from Val, some of the other tidbits released by Rex Jackson, I think some opinions regarding the failed reunion attempts need to be re-examined.

One of the recent rumors regarding the failed reunion had to do with Dave balking at a huge sum. This rumor started with Mike Anthony's last public appearance. A lot of people thought Dave was a fool to turn down that kind of money to make a fraction of that touring with Sammy.

But now, might we know better?! While it's still possible that Dave turned down a reunion, might he have had good reason? It looks like the VH world is crumbling faster than Berlin in 1945. Maybe Dave took a look at the big picture and saw that a reunion would be a disaster, what with all the baggage Ed & Al surely are carrying now.

This might also explain while Mike has made numerous appearances with Sammy. Basically if there is no VH, Ed could've told Mike to do whatever he wants.

Or it's just possible that Dave was all jazzed about the reunion, but Ed's heart wasn't into it. Hell, if I had to go through a divorce and cancer within a year, my mind certainly wouldn't be on my job.

This is all speculation, and I'm not laying blame at anyone's feet. But if we needed any further proof that the party is over for VH, I think we have it.

I agree with some of your points and I am now starting to think that it may be too late for anything positive to happen with Van Halen.

    I agree.
Maybe Roth did see the disaster coming. I also think about the reunion attempt in 96. How forgiven and friendly were all parties here if Eddie and Al got that mad after the MTV fiasco?? Look at the clips...Dave is taking and Eddie and Al and sometimes Mike seem like they wanted him to shut up. But hey, he was just being Dave. And another thing, since when does Eddie's hip need to take presedence over Roth/Vh reunion news?? That whole argument was dumb. Yeah, maybe Roth was obnoxious, but we all wanted to hear about VH's future with Roth, not about Eddie's hip surgery. Sure his surgery was a concern, but jeez, let's talk about what people are interested in. What kind of crap has VH been smoking? That's why I have been saying for years that Eddie thinks its all about him. He thinks he can be the total focus of attention and boss of the bands' affairs. But the problem with that is that it is always ONE WAY. There ain't no collaboration, there ain't no equal say. Get over the ego trip Eddie and get back to business.
Van Halen without the original 4 is just not Van Halen.

Considering everything that has happened to VH in the last couple of years, Dave might have seen something going on. Who knows....

But clearly, Ed and Al don't have their act together at the moment...

    Very interesting points!

It was disclosed by DLR on Howard Stern and in his autobiography that the reason he left VH in '85 was because of Ed and Al's substance abuse problems.

During his brief collaborations with VH the last couple of years, it's possible he saw those same problems re-surfacing and an album/tour would likely push them over the edge.

Kudos to DLR if that's the case. I'd love to see them reunited, but not if either Ed or Al are dead by the end of it.

Absolutely. The thing I wonder is, have Dave and Sammy ever gotten together recently to compare notes about the situation...

I agree and you made some strong points.
I just finished reading "Crazy from the heat" again, and Dave said that they(The Brothers) just were not getting anything done. He said that they got about a weeks worth of rehearsal done in one month. Dave said that when he was giving his reasons for leaving to Ed, he(Dave)said "Ed, your brother is up to two six packs a day. Maybe when you two can straighten up down the road we can reconviene.". Then Dave said that they hugged and cried at Dave's fathers house and it went from there. He also said that it was a good thing that he left because it made Ed and Alex get off of their and get back to working. So, maybe this alcohol problem is worse than many of us think.

Something tells me that Ed is headed down the same path taken by the likes of Keith Moon, John Bonham, etc.

It's just not as widely publicized because Ed prefers to self-destruct in private. I could be wrong, and I hope I am...

I hope that we are wrong as well. But the most recent photo that I saw of Ed in People Magazine looked terrible. His front teeth look like they are brown and about ready to fall out. It is terrible.

Time for a little perspective here. Vince Neil fucking killed two people. How many times has Sammy been divorced? Cmon, it's just a seperation. Right now (Pun intended) may be a bad time to get the VH machine up and rolling, but life goes on. This shit will pass. Give it time! Everyone is speculating that Ed's seperation (It's not even a divorce yet!) means the end of VH is just plain silly.

He has been married twice though. Seems like I remember hearing he wrote, "can't stop loving you" from his wife of 25 years perspective during the divorce (which I'm pretty sure was a pretty amicable divorce). I think Sam’s a great guy, but when you think about it, it's damn near hilarious what arrogance it has to take to write a love song for yourself from your ex-wife's perspective.

About Can't Stop Lovin' You, in an interview Sammy said that his wife said, "Sammy, I hope no one thinks this is about your ex-wife." And he said to her, "They don't, 'cause it's not."

Throw in the cancer, the loss of a label and Ed's alleged return to the bottle (just to name a few) and I think we have good reason to doubt the future of VH. You just have to wonder how much adversity one person can take. Every man has his breaking point, has Ed reached his???
