    Does anybody know what ed used for reverb on the first few albums.

    to my knowledge it was either his echo unit or reverb on the recording console. Donn Landee had a lot to do with ed's early tone on those albums. And its funny, listening to early boots there is always a particular eddieness to the sound obviously because he's using the same equipment, but as far as your particular question goes I think it was the console or one of eddies echo units.
    Van Halen....nothing else is needed....

    For VH1 era a 'Plate' type reverb on an effects unit will usually get close - a good plate reverb emulation will sound bigger and warmer than a digital room or hall reverb. My VH1 patch on my Pod uses Line 6's Vintage Plate reverb and it sounds pretty close to my ears.
