DLR HOB 7-15-06 review
This is all I can provide you people. The bastards got my camera so I couldn't take footage or snapshots. It still pisses me off that I saw 300 fuckers with cameras and I had mine taken away. Anyway to the review.
Opening bands who perform before rock legends have all kinds of pressure on them. Such was the case last night with The J Henry band. In a quick review of his band however I must classify him as a watered down Bruce Springsteen. He has that Jersey energy going throughout the show. J Hnery was also accompanied by a former guitarists from the Spin Doctors. The melodies sounded great but after awhile it got tedious as every song performed nearly lasted 10 minutes each as he dragged the songs ending out. However J Henry did leave the stage on a high note while peforming a more than perfect cover of a Led Zeppelin Classic, Whole Lotta Love.
After a good half hour wait, we were greated with a loud, fast and energenic intro before the Diamond One stepped onto the stage. Greating the audience with the smile that never dies and shouting, "Look at all the people here tonight." Then he began a set list which was actually different than what was one his site. Actually it just misses a couple of songs and others are switched around.
The action starts hot and heavy with Hot For Teacher and then he moves into California Girls, followed by Just Like Paradise. During these songs he never misses a beat. In other reviews it is stated that CG ad JLP slowed the show down, I disagree as it allowed Dave to keep his pace. The man is over 50 years old and doing high kicks and screeching at the top of his lungs will take its toll. However it never appeared as if he lost his stride. After a quick intro the his band, they rammed it hard with Running with the Devil, Somebody Get Me A Doctor and Beautiful Girls.
While Dave was the star attraction, props have to be given to his bands, especially lead guitarist Brian Young. Brain did a wonderful job of not only nailing each song beautifully but he almost made it his own. Probably his best highlight besides his own Solo whiched lead into a fast and furious Jamie's Crying, included the best version of Unchained to be performed anywhere. In fact, I found Unchained to be the best song of the night as it was played faster than usual and it had an extra beat thanks to the drummer Whatshisface(I felt I have disrespected him by forgetting his name, I'm sorry).
Throughout the show Dave managed to keep his composure. As a small sign of maturity, he never splashed the audience with Jack Daniels, resisted the urge to sexual provoke a female audience goers and was dressed modestly for a man of his age. Well he did wear leather pants but went thru a few polo buttoned shirts. Dave's voiced held up amazingly well despite when I watched him perform the bluegrass version of Jamie's Crying on Conan the other night. Dave managed to hit ever pitch, sang all the words and sounded good the whole night.
As usual he ended the show with Panama, then went into Ice Cream Man, followed Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. Afterwards he temporarily left the stage to cool off while 1984 played, then came back to perform Jump. You know what he did, and he did it without missing a beat. If Van Halen wanted a reunion then Dave is the perfect canidate since he still has it. But until such an event takes place, Dave will keep on smiling.
PS - For those of you who read the NYC review and became worried, He did not perform any BluegrassLast edited by HuBBs5150; 07.16.06 at 09:27 AM.

We had an awesome time!
I just wanted to add a few more things that Hubbs left out but a great review dude!
It was honestly the best performance I've seen Dave put on in years and we've seen Dave perform the last 4 or 5 years with this band and a few changes here or there. Yes, it's primarily a VH classics show with a few solo twists but Dave's mastered the classics and should have at this point in time!
We noticed during 'Dance The Night Away' that Dave gave his version and how he came up with the title of the tune. Now, Dave's probably said the story a dozen times but it's honestly the first time I've heard it! He reminisces back the glory days in VH and in particular a club gig the guys did and how he remembers standing in the front of the stage and says this chick was standing there with her jeans on backwards! For those who were at the gig last night, the reason for that story goes back to an incident in the parking lot, lol.
Anyway, one other thing happened during jump when Dave freaked out at someone to the stage left and I read his lips 'get the fuck outta there' he said looking over at someone. It's the first I've seen this from Dave on stage and he actually dropped his baton during the baton twirling things he does. He continued on and actually Dave's roadie picked up the baton and Dave finished off in great fashion like he never missed a beat!
Anyway, a great gig and we had the best location on the floor right in front of the soundboard, dead center! The HOB is a great place to see a gig and if anyone has doubts about Dave fronting VH for a reunion, that question has been answered, he's a perfect fit, even today!
Great show! 10 out of 10 !Bono Vox: Poetic, Political, extremely generous and just a tiny bit egomaniacal.

"Will there be a Van Halen reunion? “I have hope and faith, and that’s more than just the name of a couple of strippers from Albuquerque” -David Lee Roth
"This band is three quarters original, one quarter inevitable" -David Lee Roth~2007
"“We had a lot of fun on the tour – Dave was a blast. And next time we go out, we’re going to have some new stuff, too. I’m looking forward to getting on it. I’ve got tons of music written, such a variety of stuff… Actually, next week or the week after, Wolfie, Alex, and I are gonna start jamming. Maybe we’ll give Dave a call and see what he’s up to.” - Edward Van Halen ~ 2009

Damn right! Dave has matured more on stage this past year than Sammy Hagar has the past 10 years!

So here I am reading these reviews, getting hyped because I just heard DLR's show announced out here......and then someone has to go and bring up Sammy unprovoked.
J man, you're young, you're new......a little advice. Throwing Sam's name somewhere where it didn't need to be just makes you seem like another whiner. I'm not trying to be mean, but it definitely is an eye-roller when that first bitchy seed is planted in an otherwise pristine thread. Let's not turn this thread into what has come a thousand goddamn times before.
Dave's on tour......celebrate it. Don't piss on it.LowLifeFlatHeadScum

If OneFoot, Lowlife, you, and I all manage to swing by, we really oughta have a couple shots of JD together.
